About Olivia
In college, my first major that I focused on was teaching. However during my time in college I switched to Biosystems Engineering. While I was taking teaching classes, I was also volunteering for a local elementary school helping students with language barriers better understand what was going on in their classes. Since there was a language barrier, pictures, sounding out words and associating words with items became a key aspect of my time. In another life I would love to be a teacher as I find myself being very passionate when it comes to learning.
I graduated college with a degree in Biosystems Engineering in 2017. Immediately after graduation I became a substitute teacher because I am drawn towards helping children and was lucky enough to have a career start date that was pushed out a couple weeks.

I always start out by getting to know the student. I want to understand what their hobbies are and how the tend to learn. I also ask what they struggle with. During the first tutor session I hope to get a better understanding of my student so I can prepare scenarios or examples that will help them understand what they are being taught.
I have primarily worked with elementary students.

For the past 2 years I have participated in an event at the Kalamazoo Airzoo, a museum dedicated to aircrafts, for an event focused around females/girls in STEM. Teams of girls travel around to different booths in order to learn about a STEM aspect that will help them build a prototype and compete in a contest. Every year the challenge is different and the girls do not know what type of prototype they need to build going into it. The entire the girls are learning how to work as a team, experimenting with items they don't have access to daily and are learning different aspects of STEM. I had the opportunity to help mentor the girls that were assigned to my company. I encouraged and guided the girls to complete a successful prototype.
