About Isabella

I've always been naturally drawn to teaching children; my mother was a pre-school teacher and I would help her in her classes on my days off from school.

When I was twelve years old, a teacher at my dance studio asked me to be her teaching assistant for the younger classes, so I assisted her and other teachers throughout my teenage years. I also assisted in rehearsals for the Royal City Youth Ballet, where I helped stage pieces for numerous ballets, eventually progressing from assisting to being in charge of a number of rehearsals myself. I was offered to teach my own ballet class at age sixteen, and since then I have taught students in private studios, elementary schools, community centers, and many other places.

I have completed all of the Royal Academy of Dance ballet examinations, and have been dancing seriously since the age of four. I trained in ballet, modern/contemporary dance, jazz, and musical theatre, and received my BFA in Dance from Simon Fraser University, where I focused on ballet and contemporary dance. I performed with the Royal City Youth Ballet for over ten years as an ensemble member, a soloist, and a principal dancer in numerous ballets, was a performer in SFU's dance repertory programme, and performed in several Off-Broadway showcases. I also recently attended the Pacific Northwest Ballet's Teacher's Seminar and am familiar with their syllabus. I have years of experience teaching dancers of all ages in private and group lessons, as well as coaching and choreographing solos for performances and competitions.

About the lesson

I like to start by talking to the student about how much (if any) experience they have in ballet, and starting with an age-appropriate barre warm-up. During the barre, it's very easy to tell whether I should increase or decrease the difficulty level in order for the student to get the most out of the class. My main concern is that the class is simple enough for my students to understand the exercises and therefore work on proper and safe technique, but also challenging enough to push the students a little and keep them progressing.

I have worked with a range of students from age 1 to young adults, and I have experience working with serious students as well as those who want to dance recreationally.

I've also worked with students who are on the autism spectrum, as well as some with physical challenges and minor cognitive delays.

You want to find a teacher who is committed to advancing your technique, while making sure you are doing everything in a safe and efficient manner. You should never be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand an explanation, and it's important for your teacher to have a fairly well-rounded background, in terms of education about different techniques, anatomy, etc.

Details

My standard rate for private technique lessons is $35/hr, while the rate for my private choreographing/coaching sessions for solos is $45/hr. Semi-private rates (for sessions with two students) increase by $15/hr; semi-private technique classes are $50/hr, choreography/coaching is $60/hr.

I am also available to teach group classes, for which the rate is $20/hr per student, with a minimum of three students in the class.
