About Dave

Dave has been teaching dance since 1999, and he instructs social dancing of the lead-follow variety—couples' dancing. He offers instruction in several categories: Latin, Ballroom, Swing, and Country, with several styles under each of these categories. There are over twenty dance styles in all; see DancerGuy.com for details. Both private lessons and public classes are available; which one you select depends on your goals. If you want to learn quickly and thoroughly, private lessons are better, but if you want to meet more new people, public classes are better. I was in musical theatre for many years, and many such shows include dancing, although it's not usually true lead-follow dancing (because it's choreographed). When I discovered couples' dancing in the late 1990s, it was so cool I had to pursue it, and I did, with intensity. I took a great number of lessons from local instructors, and added more learning via video training from instructors in other parts of the world. Combining that with dancing, multiple times each week, simply for enjoyment, I constantly strive to improve smoothness and style.

About the lesson

In my beginning classes, I start by defining some terms we'll use during conversations, so the students know what I am talking about. Then I explain a small thing and the students attempt it, and if they get it right away, we move on, and if not, I diagnose the problem in understanding, explain in more detail, and try again. Once one concept is understood, I move on to the next. I am used to working with students with no dance experience, and I understand how to communicate dance-related concepts to those who have no dance knowledge or experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals in learning to dance? If you want to learn quickly and efficiently, private lessons are the way to go. If you have a looming deadline (for example, and upcoming wedding, whether your own or someone else's), private lessons are the way to go. If you perceive a particular shortcoming in your current skill set (for example, a poor understanding of rhythm), private lessons are the way to go. If you want to dance with the same partner all the time, private lessons are the way to go.

On the other hand, if you want to meet the greatest number of people, public classes are the way to go. If you want to learn in an open-ended, ongoing manner, and don't mind the inherently slower pace of learning, public classes are the way to go. If you want to dance with the greatest number of partners, public classes are the way to go.
