About Sarah

I started my teaching career at 16 years old teaching gymastics to children and teens, and eventually ended up as an instructor at my old dance studio from when I was growing up. There I was a choreographer/teacher for various styles such as hip hop, jazz, contemporary, and more. I have 18+ years of dance experience, 5 years of dance teaching experience, and 5 years of recreational gymnastics teaching experience.

My approach is to meet my students where they are at, and create foundational skills first that can be built upon.

My first job during high school was teaching recreational gymnastics. I learned proper technique from competitive and experienced Instructors. Looking for an opportunity in dance, I got a job at the local dance studio I grew up attending. I entered as a choreographer for their competitive hip hop team and taught various other styles such as jazz, lyrical, and Acro.

I have a bachelor degree in education from fau. I have 18+ years of dance experience, college level dance experience/performances. I have competitive dance experience as well as teaching experience

About the lesson

No matter whether it is a technique-based teaching or choreography-based the first thing I do is assess the skill level of the student. This may include some simple basic movement relating to the particular style of dance they choose to learn. For jazz or contemporary this may include some across the floor drills such as turns and leaps. For hip hop this might just be some moves that correspond with different tempos and styles of music, popping, locking, grooving, etc. From there I like to choreograph short dances which are called "combos" in the dance world that way the dancer student gets used to memorizing and executing choreography which can be cleaned up and tweaked to perfection by the time the lesson is over.

I have worked with students aged 5-18 and beyond. These have ranged from beginner to advanced dancers but I find that the intermediate stage is where I love to teach the most.

My greatest advice would be to find a teacher who you can speak openly with. This may include sharing past experiences with, that may not have anything to do with dance. A teacher who you can get to know and who you would like to share things about yourself with will be able to better learn what styles would be best for you, how to teach your properly, and makes the entire process more authentic, genuine, and fun!

A recent event I am fond of is creating our competition piece for our hip hop girls. This question might not be exclusive to dance but it really has been my focus these past few months. Me and my friend have choreographed individual dances for the piece since summer but now it's finally coming together and we are more than happy with the results of what's being created. It's so much fun and so rewarding to watch your imagination come to life. This is the truth of my life!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before talking to teachers about their needs, students should ask themsevles a few questions. The first question is, what are my goals exactly? The answers to this question might include, "I want to learn different dances to do with friends, record and share, and just have a good time", or "I want to be a techinically better dancer and work on my discipline in a specific area", or maybe " I just want a new workout". Whichever answer you come up with is a valid one, and worthy of finding a teacher for. You just have to be clear and upfront about these intentions beforehand.
