About Tony

Fun based Maths and Science tutoring for ages 10 - 18. I live in Taunton so most of my tutoring is online. With more than 10 years experience I am confident that it is as good as face to face sessions and has the advantage of much wider hours of availability. All you need is a laptop with a camera and a decent broadband connection. This year 2 students have won top 5% places in national exams and 1 student has completed her third year of tuition gaining 2 A* at resit. If you have doubts I provide a low-cost £30 taster session. Since Covid lockdown no problems have been found with the technology. I tutor a wider range of ages for a wide range of subjects. I specialise in students who will achieve highly. Especially achieve entry to elite university courses. University Entrance. I tutor the Admissions Testing Service examinations particularly the Maths and Physics subjects. I began with STEP in 2008. Now I cover all the Maths Tests, ENGAA and PAT, Thinking Test and the Medical Exams. I also tutor the process of UCAS application and Personal Statements. Sixth Form Entry. If you plan to transfer to a high achieving school an examination may be involved. About 80% of my candidates gain entrance. 13+ to GCSE These are standard examinations at GCSE and competitive if they are for entry to a fee paying school. The approach required by those who want to achieve highly is very similar to the requirements of higher levels. I am an approachable, friendly teacher. I often use humour to approach topics which pupils find challenging. My pupils achieve success. During 2012/2022 I have tutored private and pro bono pupils from 10 to 45 years of age in the UK and abroad online and in their homes. Students have won ⊗ entrance to Universities of all calibres but particularly Cambridge, Warwick and Imperial. One was second in the STEP test in 2021. ⊗ awards to Eton, Westminster, Wykeham Abbey, Charterhouse, JAGS and King's Canterbury, ⊗ entered Sevenoaks, St Paul's Girls, Trinity and Putney High and City of London Girls schools (13+ & Y12) ⊗ and won prizes. Since 2014 each year at least one pupil achieved 3A* and an A at A Level and at least one other another achieved 10 9's (A* old scale) at GCSE. I use a “clinical” approach. I am tutoring an individual not teaching a class so I can tailor my approach to their specific requirements. ⊗ How can I help you? - - - - Understand the specific needs. ⊗ What do you want to achieve? - - - - Agree your goals. ⊗ How shall we do it? - - - - Define a plan. Interesting activities motivate pupils. ⊗ How to support it? - - - - Use extra-curricular activity to increase pupil aspirations. ⊗ Do the work - - - - And have fun at the same time ⊗ Deliver results on time and budget. My experience is wide and, in brief, it covers ⊗ Many years - I gave my first tutorial in 1966 and I still enjoy every minute. Pupils seem to like it too. ⊗ Many subjects - My academic background covers Mathematics, Computer Science and Medicine. ⊗ Many styles - Individuals, groups, schools, universities, businesses and government departments ⊗ Many topics - academic, practical (stained glass) and sporting (sailing and athletics) I am a grandfather who delights in helping others learn and has been learning himself all his life, mostly from those he is teaching. You may think it mad but I simply just enjoy working. My training includes ⊗ Mathematics as a first degree at Cambridge University ⊗ Anatomy as a first degree at London University ⊗ Medicine as a first degree at London University - Guy's Hospital ⊗ Education training from Institute of Education (London) as a new lecturer at Guy's ⊗ Applied Mathematics (Operational Research) as a Masters degree London University ⊗ Computer Science as a Masters degree London University ⊗ Sports Coaching training for Athletics as an undergraduate athlete ⊗ Sports Coaching training for Yachting (RYA YMI) University : - University of Cambridge - BA (Mathematics) [1st] - University of London - BSc (Anatomy) [First] - Guy's Hospital Medical School, University of London - MBBS - Birkbeck College, University of London - MSc (Computer Science & Operations Research) School : Farnborough Grammar School GCSEs - Physics [A*] - Mechanics [A*] - Maths [A*] - Latin [A*] - History [A] - Geography [A] - French [B] - English Literature [A] - English Language [A*] - Chemistry [A] A Levels - Physics [A] - Chemistry [A] - Biology [A] - Applied Mathematics (AS) [A] - Advanced Mathematics [A] Prizes and Scholarships : Open Scholarship, Sidney Sussex, Mathematics, 1954 Open Science Scholar, Guys Hospital, 1957 Physiology Prize, Guys Hospital 1958 University Prize in Anatomy, University of London, 1961 Dean's Prize in Medicine, Guy's Hospital 1963 Other Qualifications : Yacht Master Instructor Mountain Guide (Skiing) I qualified in 1967 to teach Undergraduates on an Institute of Education Course run by Dr Mary Beard.

Online tutor for developing mathematics and scientific thinking skills. This is suitable for students hoping to gain entrance to elite university courses. The questions considered differ from A Level questions in that the latter are fairly stereotypical while my questions require the same level of knowledge but they need to be applied to unfamiliar situations. My questions are longer, less routine and may require dexterity to fit various topics together while constructing a solution. On the other hand, like problems or puzzles, when the solution is identified it may appear elegantly simple. While it may appear that we study specific subjects in reality we are studying problem solving. You might develop strength and technique in the gym but on a mountain face you need problem solving too. The questions we do are graded. This means they are suitable for all levels of ability from top level GCSE students through to those about to take STEP or an equivalent scientific paper.
