Excellent tutor, tutored me for over a year and is precisely the reason why I'm now studying mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge. Absolutely superb.

Her school told our Daughter that she had little chance of success at GCSE. She was miserable about this and brought her study material with her skiing at Christmas where she met Tony. They simply sat in a corner of the clubroom and chatted. She asked me to see if I could get him to act as her tutor - he called it coach.

My Son's (and one of the other boys in the group) were knowledgeable but lacked confidence. They were in the same conversations as another student who is always a bit cocky. Tony used their Ski Training to get them to try new things just as the Ski Trainers said. Why not do it for problem solving? Essay writing? Try something, make your mistake and recognise it, then redo it in a better way. Ask help from your chums. Work as a team, which is what they do when skiing.
What subject and level he taught: All subjects at once. One thing he says is that Maths answers are essays too, just like in English, exercises in clear communication of your ideas. Not particularly for Common Entrance but it helped him in his practice exams.

It was not like teaching as I know it. For example, there was a day when Tony on skis with the Trainees spoke to them about snow, water and sky. ‘Why is snow slippery?’ ‘Good slippery, bad slippery’ ‘Why is snow white or blue or grey or orange?’ ‘Why is sky blue?’ This conversation went on all day with about 8 children (boys and girls) and finished with some experiments with a mirror. a basin of water and some white A4 creating rainbows. When they were back at school his Science teacher wanted to know how he had found out about light.
There were days about building bridges out of balsa wood, sexy numbers (never knew they could be), Pam Ayres, Roman History, and one extraordinary day of ‘Why be polite?’ to do with courtesy and being an effective ski queue operator.
