About Joseph

I have been a tutor at a local tutoring center for over a year now, and I feel like it's time to expand my services to help people from all over.

I am a third year software engineering student, and I absolutely love what I do. I have taken all sorts of high level math, including: calculus 1-3, discrete math, differential equations, and everything which is a prerequisite.

For programming, I am very proficient with Java primarily, and am able to program with C/C++ and Python as well as some lesser known languages such as LISP and Prolog.

I am less than a year away from graduating with my bachelor's degree, after which time I will be pursuing a master's in the same subject field. I am always learning, and I try to pass on that sentiment to those who I teach. Seeing a student learn from me and be able to overcome challenges which were previously a roadblock for them is extremely rewarding.

I started after about 18 months into my degree. I realized that I really loved learning and talking through problems with my peers; this translated into me wanting to share my knowledge and help people who were maybe struggling through certain topics, and just needed a different explanation for how to work through the problem.

I tutored middle school and high school math at a local tutoring center for >1year.

I typically like to ask questions before getting into any work so that I can get a feel for the student's current level. It wouldn't make sense to just start trying to teach something if they are not understanding everything up until that point.

After getting an understanding of what level they are at, I start by explaining the concepts in a way that I deem to be easier to understand so that we can progress to tackling the problem.

Mostly between the ages of 14-20. Officially I have tutored middle school and high school, but I have also helped to tutor peers at my university.

I would ask that the student come prepared with questions to ask to fill in the gaps in their knowledge, or tell the teacher what it is exactly they feel like they need to know better. From there the teacher should be able to formulate questions to stimulate the process which will have the student asking themselves questions to promote critical thinking.

Assuming this is supposed to relate to tutoring - a few months ago I helped a friend learn Java as it was his first year in his computer science course and he was struggling a bit. He ended up getting an A in both of his Java classes, so I am happy that I was able to help him achieve that.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
They should be thinking about what it is that they feel like they should know better. Instead of going right to the big question, rather formulate a series of smaller questions in order the build the knowledge needed so that they would actually be able to answer the bigger question on their own.
