About Katy

My past tutoring experience

I have tutored a variety of subjects over the years. I began part time in 2004 as a college algebra tutor for a couple of non-traditional college algebra students. I tutored off and on for several years throughout college and afterward.

I began tutoring full time in 2013 and helped high school students with Dyslexia inprove their reading and writing skills. I also continued tutoring Algebra. I've helped a variety of students, all with various reasons for seeking help. I have tutored the majority of all high school classes as well as helped high school students develop good study habits and get organized. This also includes guiding seniors with their college applications and making life altering decisions. I am a social worker so I fit the role of mentor easily.

I have helped graduate students with dissertations and other research papers. I have helped several students with standardized tests essays and how to write a great persuasive essay and more!

I would say the majority of my experience has been in math (pre algebra, algebra, geometry, pre calculus) and standardized test prep tutoring. I have tutored people prepping for many different standardized tests, but, by far, the majority has been ACT test prep.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, but I changed majors so many times when I was younger so I have a lot of experience. I have learned so much about how to help an individual student learn by helping them to figure out how they learn the best and monopolizing on their strengths! No two people are exactly the same, and even when two people learn virtually in the same way, there's always something that makes them more unique in their process.

It is important to find out what concepts students aren't understanding, but what's even more important are their strengths. In my experience, the best way for any learner to improve on their weaker subjects, is by finding ways of applying their strengths to them. You would be amazed at how often this can change the way a student sees a subject completely. I would love to be a part of you or your child's exploration into finding out how they learn best.

About the lesson

It is hard to help someone that you just meet without learning things about them first. I also want to make the experience enjoyable so neither of us dread to make it to our sessions! I will start out with an icebreaker ( a game or something similar). I then want to move into the needs assessment for the services the student wants or expects. Ask if I can answer any questions they have. I also want to giv them any feedback I may have regarding their needs assessment. This is sometimes done with the students and their parents. The more people that can provide me with insight into the students, the better

I use their personal understanding and unique ways of learning to create an individualized plan for them!

Most subjects are only $30/ hr for Lawrence and the surrounding cities < 5 miles a approximately

$35/hr if driving outside of Lawrence and the surrounding cities. 5-25 miles away

35/hr plus mileage if more than 25 miles away
