About Hugh

I hold undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from Oxford University and have been tutoring US College Admissions professionally online for two years. I have provided coaching on application essay writing and admissions test taking privately, and as a freelance staff member at a number of large companies. I have helped 11 students through the process of college admission, as well as tutoring others in Admissions Tests, and have enjoyed significant success with the majority of students receiving offers from their preferred schools. I find students in the UK often receive very little help from their schools in the US application process and thus often suffer in both essays and standardised tests with a lack of technique and strategy. The latter are central to achieving the requisite high scores and thus form the backbone of my teaching.

About the lesson

As I say above, techniques and strategies form the bulk of material covered in my US Admissions classes. By their nature as standardised tests, they require strong general knowledge, time management, and deductive reasoning more so that great depth and breadth of knowledge in particular subject areas. This often poses a problem for British student's whose schooling is almost entirely geared towards preparation for the latter.
While my lessons are quite customizable depending upon how the student prefers to learn, the overall structure of my SAT, ACT and GRE courses are fairly strict so as to prepare the student for every aspect of the exam. We range across the total syllabus and focus on developing techniques under time pressure to deal with each section of the core tests. I also provide mock exams to students, including breakdowns of marks and comprehensive written feedback.
