About Mia

One of the local band directors in my town recommended me to several parents of his students who were looking for a clarinet teacher to strengthen their playing. I began with just a few students and have met many more parents and students over the years through teaching in the community and by word of mouth, which has allowed me to grow my studio.

I have been playing the clarinet for 12 years and have been teaching for 8 years. I earned my Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in May 2020 where I studied with Eli Eban. Currently I am pursuing my Master of Music in Clarinet Performance degree at California State University in Fullerton with the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Burt Hara.

During my undergraduate degree, I received a rigorous, well-rounded, and enjoyable education that included weekly private lessons, studio class, and masterclasses. Courses covered everything from Music Theory, Music History, and Aural Skills to Clarinet Pedagogy, the Beethoven Symphonies, and Postural Alignment for the Musician.

I've played in bands, orchestras, chamber ensembles, and solo performances performing classical repertoire as well as premiering new music by composers today.

I have studied at summer classical music festivals around the United States and with clarinetists in London. Other than teaching private lessons, I have taught group lessons, judged clarinet auditions, served on the woodwind faculty in the Edwardsville district Summer Band Camp, was a founding member of the Digital Clarinet Academy's THRIVE program, and held an intership with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.

About the lesson

First lessons are spent having the student play materials they are currently working on so that I may understand where they are currently and what steps are best to take for their improvement going forward. I ask students to discuss their own goals for themselves and share with them my ideas on how to work towards their goals as well as what foundational concepts we will target first and what repertoire will be used for this.

I have worked with students of all levels and ages, from absolute beginners - both children and adults - through advanced high school students preparing for undergraduate music degrees as well as with students with learning disabilities.

Find a teacher who will not only support and challenge you to be the best musician you can be but who you also connect well with personally. The best experiences I've ever had with lessons have been with teachers who don't just see me as a clarinet student but as a person beyond that who has so much to say through her instrument. To thrive as a musician, it takes much more than knowing how to blow air and move your fingers quickly. One must know how to tackle the mental game of high-level practice and performance even when things become challenging or nerves get the best of us, how to develop a range of skills on and off the clarinet, and how to diversify your approach to learning. Finding a teacher who understands this can allow for truly inspiring and exciting lessons.
