About Ben

Whether you’re picking up the cello for the first time, preparing for an important audition, or refining your artistry as an advanced musician, my goal is to help you reach your highest potential. As a professional cellist with nearly twenty years of performing experience and over a decade of teaching, I have worked with students of all ages and skill levels—from complete beginners to conservatory and professional musicians.

I believe the greatest progress comes from a consistent, collaborative teacher-student relationship built on clear goals, thoughtful practice, and genuine enjoyment of music. I have successfully prepared students for youth orchestra auditions, competitions, summer music festivals, and university and conservatory admissions, tailoring each lesson to the individual needs and aspirations of the student.

A little about me: I earned several degrees from the Colburn Conservatory of Music and the University of Southern California. Along the way, I have won top prizes in national and international competitions and had the privilege of studying with many of the world’s most distinguished musicians and teachers.

As a performer, I have appeared in concerts and music festivals throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. I regularly perform with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Diego Symphony, and also maintain an active solo chamber music career. A recent highlight was performing as soloist at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

The most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grow from week to week—not only in their technical abilities, but in their confidence, musical understanding, and independence. I strive to give every student the tools to solve challenges thoughtfully and develop habits that will serve them throughout a lifetime of music-making. Mastering an instrument is a lifelong journey, and with dedication, patience, and the right guidance, it is one of the most fulfilling pursuits imaginable.

Recent teaching positions include serving as Teaching Assistant to my professor at the Colburn Conservatory of Music, where I worked with conservatory (university) students as well as high school and middle school students. I also serve on the faculty at Fried Music, where I maintain a private studio, lead cello group classes, and coach orchestral sectionals.

About the lesson

During our first lesson, I take the time to get to know each student as both a musician and an individual. I want to understand their current level, musical interests, goals, and the amount of time they are able to devote to practicing. I also ask students to play something they are currently working on so I can assess their strengths and identify areas for growth. From the very beginning, I strive to develop both technical proficiency and musical ideas. This personalized approach allows us to establish clear goals and work together as efficiently and thoughtfully as possible.

I work with students of all ages and experience levels, from those selecting their first cello to advanced musicians preparing for performances, auditions, and competitions. Every lesson is tailored to the individual, with instruction designed to support each student's unique goals, strengths, and areas for growth.

I encourage students to find a teacher who is both an active performer and a dedicated educator. Each discipline strengthens the other, resulting in a more complete musical perspective and a well-rounded approach to learning.

The most rewarding moments as a teacher are seeing students recognize their own growth. One student came to me several years ago as a beginner and was recently accepted into a regional orchestra—a milestone that reflects years of consistent dedication and hard work.

Perfect! Ben is professional and a really good teacher. His ability to teach not only the techniques but about how to think about the music is what’s been most enjoyable. I played for 10 years and laid off the cello for over 30 yrs and feel thankful to find a teacher that can clearly convey ideas and listens carefully and has allowed me to progress quicker then I had expected in 6 months, but most importantly I’m enjoying practicing which I can’t really recall in childhood!
