About Dexter
Hi I’m Dexter! I have been playing upright bass since 1997 (22yrs) and bass guitar since 2003 (16yrs). I have played with numerous original bands, cover bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles and theatre productions. I played with the Stamford Young Artist Philharmonic in CT for 2 years. I have 8 albums of original music out currently and many more album credits for studio work I have done.
If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at playing (no pun intended) or if you play already and you want to become better, I’m here to help! My goal is to give you all the tools you need to really experience music from this side of the coin. Music is the power of joy and healing. In my hardest times I could always pick up my bass and escape even if just for a moment. I want to pass on all the knowledge I’ve acquired over the years to you all. I can also teach you how to play that bad ass bass line you’ve always wanted to know!

I have been playing music since I was 2 years old so I have about 30 years of experience. I have performed more times than I can remember at this point. I’m gonna say at least 1000 shows. I also play violin, piano, guitar, drumset and hand percussion. I’m currently in 4 bands. Two original bands, one cover band, and one group with a Grammy nominated composer. I also pick up gigs on the side. I did attend college for music performance. A degree that I did not complete. But it was because I became so busy actually playing out that I didn’t have time to go to school anymore. I plan on going back one day but trust me, I have all the education and training needed to be a good teacher. I’ve had many students and it was always a great experience.

I typically start with an evaluation of my students playing experience and ability. If they have none, this part goes super fast. From there I like to see what their goal is for their playing. ie. their favorite bands or players etc. It helps me prepare lessons that will keep you interested. Learning and developing your playing muscles can be hard at times and it’s hard to stay motivated if you’re not having fun.
Once ive got a good idea of the individual student we get into the playing. I start where my students are at. If you haven’t played before, we start from the beginning. The basics. Getting in touch with your instrument. Learning how it feels and how to properly play notes. From there we will move into songs/jamming so you can see how to apply the lessons you learn to real playing situations. We will constantly be going back then the basics too. As you learn more, ideas that you already know, can make even more sense. Or they can tie into other concepts. The faster my students learn and understand the pieces the faster we can go. Your lesson experience will be tailored to you.
