About Monte
Training Institute for Medical Emergencies and Rescue (TIMER), founded in 1980 and based in Staten Island, NY, provides comprehensive EMS education that prepares students for New York State certification. Programs include EMT-Basic original and refresher courses; First Aid and CPR, including American Heart Association BLS and ACLS; Certified First Responder (CFR) original and refresher; and EMS continuing education such as CEVO II, Haz-Mat Awareness, and CISM.
Courses are taught by experienced EMS professionals with extensive field backgrounds. TIMER supports a faculty of 50+ instructors and offers an internship pathway for NYS EMTs to become state-certified instructors. The EMT program blends lecture, skills labs, and clinical experience, totaling about 200 hours over approximately 3.5 months, with a minimum of 10 clinical hours in a hospital emergency department or on a 911 ambulance. Clinical affiliates include Richmond University Medical Center (Emergency Department and EMS), Northwell Health Staten Island University Hospital Department of EMS, and Volunteer Heart Ambulance.
An authorized sponsor of the New York State Department of Health, TIMER conducts NYS certification exams on-site. Applicants must be at least 17 years old by the month of the written exam and meet NYS requirements. Originating as a REMSCO instructor group led by founder Monte Posner, TIMER continues to train first responders for service across New York.
