About Emily
Before graduating from LaGuardia CC with an associate's degree in Deaf Studies, I was recommended to become an ASL tutor by the head of the Deaf Studies department. I have been a tutor/teaching assistant for about 2 years now, and want to have more opportunities to hold tutoring sessions. Whether it’s my students from LAGCC or other ASL students, I am willing to help. I myself am a hearing student, so I am constantly practicing my ASL grammar and learning new signs. I do this by going to weekly ASL Chats via Zoom. Through these chats, I not only practice my grammar but also am taught ASL Slang and other signs that are used more often in the Deaf community.
I love being able to supplement other students learning and try to motivate them to keep learning (from Deaf instructors) after their classes in school finish. I like to think of tutoring as another way that I can improve my own skills as well. Thinking this way keeps me motivated to find resources (from Deaf creators) to help both my students and myself continue expanding our vocabulary and improving our ASL grammar. Ultimately, the goal is to bridge the gap between the hearing and the deaf without having the deaf accommodate the hearing.
I have been learning ASL for about 5 years. I graduated in 2020 and have an associate's degree in Deaf Studies. This means I have completed ASL 1 through ASL 4 on a college level. I have also taken ASL 5 and ASL 6 at the Sign Language Center. I go to ASL Chats around 3 times a week, so I am constantly in contact with the Deaf Community and practicing my skills.

I typically work with college students, on all levels. I have worked with students from ASL1 all the way through ASL4.
I am not a teacher or an instructor. If you are looking to be taught, GO TO A DEAF INSTRUCTOR! One should never go to a hearing person to be taught ASL. If you are looking for a tutor and someone to supplement your learning, go to someone who has been learning the language for at least 4 years. This means the person would have enough time to get at least an associate's degree as well as keep up their skills for another 2 years.
