About Matthew

Since buying my first electric guitar at 16 years old, I soon found myself in a neighbourhood band and performing at birthday parties. During this time I had also ventured out into street performance in the Melbourne CBD, which solidified the direction of my career path into that of music by the time I turned 20.

Since then I have continued to perform in bands and as a solo artist, and providing engaging lessons to many aspiring musicians.

In 2026, I had published the six-volume "Musician's Dictionary" series and invented "Melbourne Music Theory". The former, a comprehensive resource of tonal, percussive, and rhythmic vocabulary. The latter, An intuitive framework for music theory that features a 7-line stave based on the chromatic scale as opposed to the traditional 5-line diatonic stave, a flexible yet simple approach to rhythmic dictation, an improvement upon the "Nashville Numbering" chord charting system, and much more.

About the lesson

Providing instrumental music lessons since 2012 out of my own business, plus various studios and schools, I facilitate the learning process for my students by encouraging them to be creative and explore music according to their interests to build a solid foundation for further creativity, exploration, confidence, and mastery of the instrument.

I aspire to continually improve fluency, articulation, and eloquence in the language of music. It is my primary goal to aid and encourage others to attain levels of musical literacy and ease of expression comparable to skills in spoken and written language.

* First lesson is free, to help get an idea of what kind of music you want to learn, your current abilities, and to help you decide if you would like to commit to taking future lessons.
* Lesson durations available are 30, 45, and 60 minutes.
* I teach all levels to students 15 years and above.
* Lessons take place at my home studio at Prahran, student's house, or online.
