Lesson Plan: “Grocery Shopping and Meal Planning”

Target: Students aged 18–21 in transition programs
Goal: Teach students how to plan, budget, shop, and prepare a simple meal independently

1. Warm-Up / Discussion (5 minutes)
Ask students: “What do you like to eat? How do you usually get your groceries?”
Discuss the importance of meal planning, budgeting, and making healthy choices.
Use visuals: a sample grocery list, pictures of different foods, or real items.

2. Teaching Point / Instruction (10 minutes)
Step 1: Choosing a Meal
Pick a simple recipe (e.g., pasta with veggies, sandwiches, or scrambled eggs).
Show the ingredients visually and explain why each is needed.

Step 2: Budgeting
Show how to check prices online or in a store flyer.
Explain how to compare items (e.g., store brand vs. name brand).

Step 3: Making a Grocery List
Write down each ingredient, quantity, and estimated price.
Teach abbreviations and simple symbols (e.g., “lb,” “doz”).
3. Guided Practice (15 minutes)
Activity: Students create their own grocery list for a chosen recipe.
Give a simple budget limit and ask them to choose items within that amount.
Walk around, offer support, and ask guiding questions:
“Do we have everything we need?”
“Can we get this cheaper somewhere else?”

4. Independent Practice / Role Play (15–20 minutes)
Set up a mock grocery store in the classroom or use online grocery websites.
Students “shop” for items using their list and budget.
Encourage them to:
Check prices
Compare brands
Stick to their list
Make substitutions if needed

5. Wrap-Up / Reflection (5 minutes)
Discuss what went well and what was challenging.
Ask: “How will this help you when you go shopping for real?”
Optional: Students create a personal checklist for grocery shopping to use at home.
