About Mark

I am a graduate of Emporia State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. After graduation I taught first grade for five years and then one each of 4th and 5th grade. After leaving the teaching profession I have continued to teach reading, with a focus on 70 phonograms and 17 spelling rules. I've found this extremely effective and have been very successful tutoring both beginning readers and struggling readers.

Although now in the IT industry, I remain very passionate about the teaching of reading. It is rare that I find adults who are familiar with all 70 phonograms and the 104 associated sounds. I'm passionate about teaching reading because what I teach gives children the tools to be successful readers. I find my passion is contagious with both students and their parents once they start the learning process.

I don't just tutor students. It is very important that parents learn the same information at the same time because parents are instrumental in their children becoming successful readers. And as mentioned previously, what I'm teaching parents will not know. If they did know, their children would not need help with reading. I can guarantee that.

About the lesson

My focus is working with struggling students in the upper elementary grades who have not found success with reading either in school or with other tutors. I excel at finding a student's motivation and exploiting that. This is in addition to the intrinsic motivation that my students experience once they learn that they can be successful using the tools I share. I also have a knack for making learning to read fun.

I'm passionate about teaching reading because even though I was a first-grade teacher when I discovered the phonograms, I was entirely unaware of teaching reading this way. It made a huge difference in my life, my own children's lives, and many students' lives. I'm tutoring to pass that on to as many others as possible.

My lessons include the teaching of 70 phonograms and their associated sounds (104 in all!). I also teach spelling rules that help children decode words. My students are excited to find new words to practice their newly-learned skills so we spend a lot of time reading. Which is the real key to improving!
