About Ellen
I'm a digital designer and researcher currently studying for a Masters in Information Experience Design at the Royal College of Art. My professional experience has been considerable and varied so far, with past clients including Worldpay, the European Commission, Spring Studios New York, apparel giant VF, and Unite Students. I also design and develop interactive electronic instruments, one of which I presented at the Tate Modern a few months ago.

As I'm looking to gain experience in teaching and mentoring, I'd like best to discuss your needs with you and identify what you would like to gain before laying out any specific lesson plan or methodology. But I can say this: if you're somebody with an interest in pursuing design (as a career, or in education), but you aren't quite sure which side of the design world you'd fit into best, or what type of skills you should be building up to get things moving, I can definitely help you out with that. I've been there myself, and will go out of my way to motivate you, enhance the best sides of what you're doing already, and would like to think I'm constructive, enthusiastic and kind in nature.
I am able to provide a far-reaching, engaging and critical overview to design thinking and practice for those wanting to "find their way". However digital the skills you would like to learn may be, we will never step too far away from physical tools and techniques which very much inform all areas of design, so lessons with me will involve lots of sideways thinking, involving going outside and observing, sketching out ideas, card sorting, and generally using pens and paper! Depending on whether its appropriate for you, we can delve into printmaking, bookmaking, or physical computing. Whatever the process we select is, you will develop in the way you build layouts, select colours, understand an audience, work with content, and interpret a brief.
For students with a clearer idea of where they would like to take their learning, my advanced skillset lies in UX design, data visualisation and interaction design, so I can also provide support with portfolios, web and mobile best practice, and use of specific programmes - after a consultation, I can build a lesson plan that involves anything including but not limited to: Arduino, Raspberry Pi and Processing.js, Max MSP, the principles of UX and HCI, Web and Mobile best practice, paper prototyping, wireframing, interpreting data, Google Analytics, Adobe CC and best practice for the latest digital programs like Sketch and Axure. If you'd like, we can even go a little further here and talk about front-end development.
