About Ilmari
I wrote my first, modest program when I was about ten years old. Over a decade later I majored in computer science at the university, although I ended up working full-time about a year before I would have graduated with a master's degree. In addition to experience gained while studying and working on various hobby projects over the years, I've been coding professionally for soon a decade, including related things like working closely with customers, helping recruit new programmers, and so on.
These days I am working on my own game project, which is still perhaps a year from release. That's why I'm here now!

I can teach programming and related skills from the very beginning up to university level. In addition, I love to think about the wider context first and plan what to do based on that – in this case it means, for example, taking into account the practical prerequisites and skills related to programming that make it possible to actually realize entire projects. I feel that this point of view is often missing when reading online tutorials, as well as in higher education.
In my view, programming is a fairly simple skill for almost anyone to learn, especially when you focus on solving a limited and theoretical problem, or there is a ready-made programming environment in front of you to write the code in. Instead, the biggest hurdle to actually using programming skills to solve a real-world problem often seems to be more about all the other practical skills and considerations involved. Which tools are needed on your computer, how to run the programs and on which platform, which languages and technologies should be used, what are the modern practices for working with a team and an existing codebase, how to search for more information when you inevitably can't remember everything by heart, and so on. One might already know how to program, but still feel like there is a massive gap in putting that skill to practical use. I can help fix that!
Lessons will be tailored according to the student's needs. Don't worry if you don't have a clear understanding of which things you might want to learn, we can begin by looking at what it is you want to achieve in the first place.
Example students:
- A complete beginner who is interested in e.g. the possibilities programming might offer for their existing profession, a project, or even in making art!
- A self-taught coder who is preparing to look for a job in the field
- A computer science student who wants to constantly apply what he has learned in the courses to support his learning and to be ready for working life right away after graduation
