About Delroy

Hi, I'm Delroy, a 34-year-old piano tutor from Johannesburg with over 7 years of experience teaching piano.

My journey as a piano teacher has largely been through a church setting, where I have had the opportunity to teach students with different levels of experience and musical backgrounds. I have also taught students through house calls in my local area, which has given me experience adapting lessons to each student's individual needs and learning pace.

I currently serve as the Musical Director at The Great Revival Evangelical International Ministries, where music plays an important part in my day-to-day life. This experience has helped me develop not only as a pianist, but also as a musician, teacher and musical leader.

What I enjoy most about teaching is seeing that moment when something that seemed difficult suddenly makes sense to a student. Whether it's understanding a musical pattern, getting your fingers to cooperate, or finally being able to hear and reproduce a pitch, those small breakthroughs are what make teaching rewarding for me.

I'm a patient and encouraging tutor, and I believe learning piano should be challenging enough to help you grow while still being enjoyable. My goal is to help students build a solid musical foundation that gives them confidence both at the piano and in their understanding of music.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching piano is built around three important areas: understanding music, developing piano technique, and training the ear.

I believe students learn more effectively when they understand what they are playing rather than simply memorising which keys to press. My goal is to help students gradually develop the ability to read, understand, play, and hear music.

MUSIC THEORY (Understanding the Music)
We explore the building blocks of music in a practical way, including notes, scales, intervals, patterns, chords and basic musical structures.

FINGER INDEPENDENCE & DEXTERITY (Developing Technique)
Students work on the physical skills needed to play comfortably and accurately. This includes finger independence, coordination, dexterity, hand position and controlled movement.

EAR TRAINING (Learning to Hear Music)
I also place strong emphasis on developing the musical ear. Students learn to recognise differences in pitch, match pitches, identify intervals and listen for musical patterns.

A typical lesson combines these three areas rather than treating them as completely separate subjects so that students can develop a genuine understanding of how music works.
