About Leona

I have a degree in Zoology (1993) and Post Graduate Diploma in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling (1998). I have a Post Graduate Certificate of Education (2011). I have been employed professionally for Assistance Dogs UK registered Assistance Dog Charities in the UK for 25 years as a dog trainer and placement officer, training the dogs to work in people's own homes. I have worked professionally in the UK in animal welfare and abroad for the last 10 years with street dogs and cats, performing TNR programmes and assisting adoptions. I am as interested in behaviour as I am in medicine, and understand how closely these two areas interact, hence I work on Veterinary referral only for real behavioural cases.

About the lesson

1 hour training session- looking at the relationship you and your pet share. Getting to know your pet/ understanding what motivates them. Observing you interacting with your pet to perform basic exercises such as: stroking your pet, playing with a toy, grooming your pet, feeding a selection of treats, recalling your pet. Training sessions can then begin for life skills (teaching settle, recall), teaching cue training (sits, downs, stay, pay attention, heel), puppy training-separation/toilet training/socialisation. You will see results and gain understanding in 1 session but to embed training a weekly session is advisable (Can do fortnightly) In order to help you stop unwanted behaviours, I need to understand what worries or frightens your pet too and their early history clinical and behavioural is relevant for working with separation anxiety, toileting issues, barking, aggression, bonding issues (Veterinary referral needed). Food treats, toys, clicker are often required. Plus the attitude: you get out what you put in! Confidentiality respected. Try to get all family members on board for best results. Training will always use food & toys, praise is not enough. Evidenced back practice methods. No old ideals. Modern training methods.
