About Philippe
I’ve been playing hand percussion for 3 decades. I studied intensively with a master percussionist John Arucci for 3 years while studying at Princeton University. More recently, I’ve taken percussion and songwriting courses at the Berklee School of Music (online program). I am a working musician, gigging regularly across the DMV, especially on congas, cajon, and djembe. My style is very encouraging as a teacher, but I also have high expectations of my students.

I have taught percussion to dozens of students of all ages, including both private and group instruction
I have also been a teacher (in English mainly) for 7 years earlier in my career at both the middle school and university level. As a result I am very comfortable with teaching, evaluation and mentorship
My lesson plans are dynamic, engaging and collaborative. My first job is to listen to the student’s goals — and then work together to meet those goals.
We will focus on hand technique, mastering key rhythms and also improvisation. Added bonus: Many of the skills are transferable across different instruments allowing you to become a multi instrumentalist
