About Jonathan
Hello! My name is Jonathan Irwin. I've been a full time English teacher since 2014. I worked at Manor High School in Oadby for 5 years and trained at Moat Community College and City of Leicester. Since September 2019 I've been working as a supply teacher to see as many different schools in the area as I can. I've been primarily employed in that time at Gateway Community College and St Paul's Catholic School, although I've also worked at several other schools.
My teaching style is student led. I like nothing more than being surprised by a particularly interesting piece of analysis or turn of phrase by a student. I view my job as being to foster independence, rather than just to pour information into a student. This independence and creativity is not only professionally rewarding for me personally, it is also of increasing importance in the new GCSEs in English.
I generally begin by providing a scaffold to their writing which I gradually remove, until they are analysing and writing independently. The nature of this scaffolding will depend on the student. If they struggle, it may be more on basics such as spelling and grammar. If their focus is simply to achieve a passing grade, the focus will be much more on structure and how to achieve the assessment guidelines of the exam board. If targeting a high grade, such as a 7-9, the focus shifts towards how to make their writing stand out, to make it exceptional in every sense of the word. These highest grades are harder to achieve in English than ever before, so individuality and flair are the key focus.
