About Johnathan
I am a professionally certified P–12 visual arts educator with nearly a decade of classroom teaching experience, specializing in ceramics and studio art. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) with a concentration in Glassblowing, a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Art Education, and an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Art Education. I am also currently pursuing a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Art Education at Indiana University.
Since 2017, I have taught visual arts at the elementary and secondary levels. My current position focuses primarily on ceramics, where I teach multiple levels of pottery, from introductory courses to advanced, independent artistic investigations. I develop curriculum, provide technical instruction, and guide students through the processes of making, experimenting, reflecting, and refining their work. I have also served as a guest lecturer at Dalton State University, providing arts integration instruction to preservice educators.
Ceramics is both my professional specialization and an important part of my own artistic practice. I enjoy helping students develop an understanding of clay as a material while building the technical skills and independence necessary to pursue their own creative interests. Through live online lessons from my ceramics studio, I bring my classroom teaching experience directly to individual students, adapting instruction to their goals, experience levels, and available equipment. Whether you're beginning to work with clay or looking to develop your existing skills, I aim to provide thoughtful, supportive instruction grounded in sustained artistic practice.

My approach to teaching ceramics combines technical instruction with opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and artistic development. I believe that learning to work with clay involves more than mastering individual techniques. It also requires developing an understanding of the material, learning through experience, and gradually becoming more independent in making artistic decisions.
Lessons begin with an understanding of each student's experience, interests, and goals. From there, I provide structured guidance appropriate to their skill level, with opportunities for hands-on practice, experimentation, and constructive feedback. For online lessons, I teach live from my ceramics studio, where I can demonstrate techniques, explain processes, and provide guidance as students work with their own materials. I emphasize developing technical proficiency while encouraging students to investigate possibilities, reflect on their work, and learn through revision and continued practice. As students become more confident, I gradually support greater independence in their creative decisions.
My teaching experience includes multiple levels of secondary ceramics, from introductory pottery through advanced, student-directed artistic investigations. I am particularly well suited to working with beginners and developing ceramic artists who want to strengthen their foundational skills, explore new approaches to working with clay, or deepen their existing practice. My goal is to help students develop both their technical abilities and their capacity to pursue meaningful artistic inquiry at their own level.
