About Merryn
Hi, I'm Merryn.
I am a qualified teacher and a Psychology graduate (University of Southampton)
I have over 3 years experience as a teacher and course leader, however I have been tutoring/1:1 teaching for 5+ years and am proud to say that I have consistently managed to support students to jump a minimum of 2 academic grades.
Any sessions you book with me will be tailored for you, your current level and your learning/progression needs. Whether you want to learn for fun, catch up on missed learning or prep for an exam, I can help you.
Any knowledge and experience I can bring to you is not just theoretical, as I have experienced a range of care roles, primarily in domiciliary care, and am currently actively practicing.
I have a special interest in academic research, having engaged in 2 research projects at university and 2 additional research projects since graduating (all with an educational focus). If you are learning research skills/methods or have a personal interest in research I would love to help you with this.
I currently work part-time in private care and so must arrange sessions around this responsibility.
My personal interests lie in food, music, woodwork and my giant puppy (which I will happily show you ample pictures of!)
*Additional Information*
I have experience in a broad range of educational environments, including overseas teaching in an orphanage, a preparatory school and SEN environments.
However, the majority of my experience lies in teaching and course leading CACHE and BTEC level 3 Health and Social Care in Reading and Oxford, UK. Over my 3 years in this role my students achieved the highest grades in the college's record, and learnt to apply this knowledge in a broad range of professional environments via my vast industry connections and experiences.
A personal favourite of mine, was conducting a project inline with British Science Week. Here we bought to life an MIT study that demonstrated how memories can be lost or recovered in patients with dementia. In this project students learnt about the role of neurons and neurotransmitters and how they work to store and recall memories.
Prior to teaching HSC I specialised in foundation GCSE maths. I established and ran a college wide 'Maths Hub', supporting students aged 16-50+ to resit their maths GCSE. My expertise in this area were refined in a course and research project I undertook with the national STEM centre in York. The effort was worth it, as each student showed measurable improvement for engaging in this service, one student even advanced 4 grades over 2 terms of working with me.
Along side this, I also teach a drama class for primary school aged children and classes for LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) examinations, up to grade 5. I hold an A grade in A level theatre and industry experience.

I am happy to teach to exam/coursework, general academic progression (to supplement school/college) or for personal improvement and interest. Sessions can be done as a one off for a specific aim, or as a series of sessions for longer term learning.
The session content/plan will be tailored entirely for your aims, needs, level and learning style(s). This will be done by establishing a tuition plan with you in an initial consultation session. During this I would like to learn of your schooling-background, learning aims and current study practices.
I am a relaxed and relatively informal educator, people can't learn if they're stressed or under pressure. Learning must be personalised and tailored for each learner, in this way anyone can learn anything, given the right method and speed for them.
