About Kesatebrhan
I received my BEd degree in Chemistry, Higher Diploma in Teacher Education and M.Sc. degree in Organic Chemistry from Haramaya University, Ethiopia in July 2006, 2007 and 2010, respectively. I completed my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry with specialization in Carbohydrate Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Cheng-Chung Wang at Academia Sinica and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan in January 2020. During my Ph.D. study, I worked in the development of synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of sialo-glycans. After my Ph.D. graduation, I worked as Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Institute of Chemistry, Academia Sinica with Prof. Cheng-Chung Wang and developed efficient synthetic methods for the procurement of small molecules. Then, I moved to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), USA to further pursue a Postdoctoral Research with Prof. Qibin Zhang. During my position at UNCG, I worked on the identification, quantification and synthesis of lipid standards containing very-long chain fatty acids. I joined the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in December 2022 to perform my third Postdoctoral Research Associate. I have 8 years teaching experience for multiple science major disciplines by employing a student-centered teaching approach.

I studied Bachelor of Education (BEd) in Chemistry and Higher Diploma in Teacher Education from Haramaya University to improve the quality of education in Ethiopia by creating an innovative and inclusive learning environment. Additionally, I have received my Ph.D. and MSc degrees in Organic Chemistry. I have 8 years teaching experience for multiple science major disciplines by employing a student-centered teaching approach. I taught several chemistry courses including Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II with labs, and Biochemistry courses at Haramaya University of Ethiopia. Based on my previous teaching and research experience, I am deeply committed to teaching large lecture and laboratory courses in general, organic, and biochemistry. I will employ a student-centered teaching approach. I prioritize hands-on learning, close student interactions and mentorship. I provide adaptable teaching by prioritizing active learning and hands-on experiences, including laboratory work and real-world problem-solving, to keep students engaged. Hence, I want to build stronger relationships with students and provide individualized instruction. The student-centered teaching methods encourage reflective and intentional teaching practices tailored to the diverse perspectives. It promotes students to explore new ideas, engage in active participation including critical thinking and active involvement in the learning process, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills and cooperative learning. Furthermore, the student-centered learning approach promotes both academic and personal growth, guiding students to become lifelong learners and responsible global citizens. To make my teaching more inclusive and interactive, I employ diverse teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, debates, and small group work. I further enhance my teaching by uploading various activities, including assignments and recorded video lectures, and other interactive platforms. These tools allow me to foster a dynamic and engaging classroom environment. I have made my teaching approach more engaging and enjoyable by incorporating hands-on activities. In my stereochemistry class, I encourage students to build molecular structures using atomic model kits. I also tell stories for students about world-class scientists who won Nobel Prizes in Chemistry and changed the world. Students can be impressed by the successful achievements of such chemists and navigate them as a role model to become top scientists in their long professional journey.
