About Claire
Hello! I am a piano teacher with over 4 years of teaching experience and more than 200 students taught across all levels and age groups. My approach to piano teaching is shaped by many years of my own musical study and performance, during which I encountered both inspired teaching that transformed my playing and less inspired teaching that set me back — and those contrasting experiences have given me a very clear picture of what good piano teaching actually looks like. I teach classical, jazz, and popular piano, and I work with students preparing for ABRSM and Trinity examinations as well as students with purely recreational or performance goals. I am particularly known for my ability to diagnose technical problems precisely and efficiently — to identify not just that something is wrong with a student's playing but exactly what physical or conceptual issue is causing it — and this diagnostic precision is something that significantly accelerates my students' progress. My lessons are musical from beginning to end. Even purely technical work is framed musically, because I want every student to understand why they are working on what they are working on and what musical benefit it will produce. That understanding keeps students motivated and ensures that technical progress translates directly into more musical, more expressive, and more enjoyable playing.

I teach piano by building a foundation of genuine musicianship alongside technical skill, because a technically proficient but musically empty performance is ultimately unsatisfying for both the player and the listener. From the very first lesson I engage students in musical thinking — asking them what they hear, what mood a piece conveys, what the composer might have intended — and I use these conversations to develop an interpretive ear that grows alongside the technical capability. Technically, I focus on developing relaxed, efficient, and controlled movement at the instrument. I pay close attention to tension — both visible and hidden — because tension is the enemy of both good technique and good sound, and it tends to become ingrained if not addressed early. I use a variety of technical approaches including scales, exercises, and études, always contextualizing them within the musical demands they are designed to serve. I cover a wide repertoire across classical, romantic, and contemporary periods, and I am happy to teach jazz piano, popular song accompaniment, and lead sheet reading to students who want to develop in those directions. I am experienced with ABRSM and Trinity syllabi and prepare students for grade examinations with great thoroughness, including all elements of the examination, not just the pieces.
