About Joy
I am a UK-based academic with over 25 years’ experience in higher education, including teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and postgraduate level across health and science disciplines.
I have worked extensively with students from a wide range of backgrounds, including international cohorts, and understand the challenges of adapting to UK academic expectations — particularly in relation to critical thinking, writing style, and independent learning.
I have a particular interest in supporting students as they develop confidence in their academic voice and approach, especially where they may feel capable in their subject but unsure how to express or structure their ideas effectively.
I also welcome students with a wide range of learning styles, including those who identify as neurodiverse, and aim to create a calm, constructive environment in which different ways of thinking are recognised and supported.

I offer independent, one-to-one mentoring focused on developing academic thinking, research design, and writing skills. My approach is structured, supportive, and tailored to the individual — particularly for students who feel capable in their subject but are unsure how to organise, begin, or follow through on complex academic tasks, and would benefit from a clearer, more manageable way of approaching their work.
Many of the students I work with understand their subject well, but need support in translating that understanding into clear, well-structured academic work.
