About Kevin
Greetings! My name is Kevin and I am eager to show you American signs and provide you with a positive experience learning American Sign Language (ASL). Whether you are learning to communicate with friends, family or to satisfy your own curiosity, I will support you in your journey. Let me give you a little background about me. I gradually lost my hearing at two years old. I wore powerful hearing aids, relied on lip reading and learned sign language through an interpreter at the school. As I entered my college years, I took ASL courses to understand and improve my expressive ASL skills. After I finished my studies in Linguistics with a concentration of ASL and English interpreting, I worked as a deaf interpreter and teacher. I have years of experience working with new and aspiring ASL learners. My goal is to make your learning fun, inclusive and engaging!

It depends on levels of experience, but if you are completely new, I focus on dexterity of your hands, fingers and wrists. Moving your ligaments and joints to create different hand-shapes with different exercises. We focus more on finger spelling, and vocabulary development. Gradually as you build your pool of words and gain more confidence in processing speed, we will later introduce simple sentences for introducing yourself/greeting.
If your vocabulary is intermediate, verbs are used more and this requires movement and spatial awareness. Eye movement, non manual (no hands) use of shoulders, head, torso are emphasized here. We get into facial expressions of topics, questions, and sizes using our eyebrows, cheekbones, and mouth.
These are general topics that I would introduce and each individual is unique. This plans would be adjusted according their strengths and weakness.
