About Maryam
We learn theory at school but often the teachers don’t explain what this is relevant to in the real world. But this relevance is exactly why we study and educate our children, because we want them to be fully prepared for the real world. Did you know that the reflux practical technique also applies to when we cover the lid to boil our rice? Or that the acids we learn about in chemistry have chemical properties which we can dilute and use for our skincare? Small practical examples and contexts such as these which we can teach our children will help these so-called “challenging” concepts EASY! And that is what I do. I make everything I teach relevant and exciting, so the child has fun learning ALL the content without even realising they put any effort in!

Having been taught at the leading King Edgware Grammar School and having taught at the renowned tuition company in the UK Explore Learning, I have a lot of experience in teaching 11+ students of various abilities, beginner to advanced, on how to think critically and analytically in a confined space of time under exam conditions. This is not an easy task for children who are at the tender age of 11 and under, as they are not used to situations like these at school, nor have they experienced anything like it. My method of teaching is to make the tasks fun, and maintain interest of the student by giving them explanations of all the concepts in the subjects; I help them to understand how to use the skill, not just that they need to use the skill. I encourage them to apply the skill to several different situations, not just limited to the one question they were given. If they get a question incorrect, I patiently ask them to tell me how they worked through the question, because often students start off correctly but make a mistake in one of the later stages. Once I have heard the student explaining how they did the question, I see at which stage they slipped on and help them understand why what they did was not correct and how to get to the right method, so that they get it every single time. The students explaining their methodologies also helps them reinforce their own understanding, as having to explain what you did requires careful thought processing- this, again improves the skills they need for Grammar School exams.
