About Carmen
I have been teaching online since October 2020, after graduating from The University of Kent with a first class honours degree in Liberal Arts. I have tutored both privately and through a South African tutoring company.
At the beginning of 2021 I completed my level 5 240 hour TEFL certificate, including a 60 hour course focusing on One-to-one and online teaching, which has helped me to provide more engaging online lessons.
Before starting university I gave in-person lessons for 6 months, and during my year studying in France I was part of a community service project in which we carried out visits to refugee families, helping them to practice and improve their French.
I am fluent in Afrikaans and English, and speak French at C1 level. As language learning has always been such a prominent aspect of my life I am aware of the challenges faced by students, making me a very patient tutor.

I aim to create a safe environment where students feel free to practice and discover new language without fear of making mistakes. I use many real-world sources in my lessons to expose students to everyday language, with the aim of helping them to develop a good instinct for how the language is spoken naturally. I will also incorporate topics and vocabulary based on the student’s request, for example including lessons centering around work or the environment.
I take a relatively informal approach to lessons, as I want my students to feel comfortable, and am willing to spend more or less time on certain aspects of the lesson depending on the student's questions or understanding of the work covered. I also encourage students to interact as much as possible and to use the opportunity to practice their conversation skills with a native speaker.
