About John
I have a Ph.D. from Cornell University and have worked as a college professor in the humanities and social sciences for 25 years in a variety of colleges and universities throughout the Los Angeles area.
As an "old school" professor, I demanded that my students write papers, not take exams, for learning how to express one's ideas through clear writing is more than a mere skill, it is power.
After retiring from teaching college, I took to working as a high-school tutor, mostly helping students write papers in a great variety of classes, from literature to psychology to American government and history.

I work with high school, college, and returning-to-school adult students to improve English vocabulary and writing skills, either to help with particular writing projects or to simply expand vocabulary knowledge altogether.
I have been studying the structure and etymology of the English language through Ancient Greek, Latin, German, Spanish, and French for the past three decades as a scholar.
My teaching methods, however, are geared to the needs of the particular students I work with -- I can help students working with a particular vocabulary in a particular field, or I can help students work on a more intellectual vocabulary, such as that found in the New York Times.
I love the English language, and I love to teach - so I am ready to go as soon as you are!
