About Haig

Books have always been a hugely important aspect of my life, from times when I need to escape, to times I need to connect more deeply to the world. What books have done for me, the access they have provided to art more generally is enormous. Naturally I want to share this with as many people and as widely as possible. Despite common conceptions literature is fun. Really fun. Sharing the fun sounds like a really good time to me.

About the lesson

Haig is passionate about his subject and about sharing it. He believes that the transformative power of literature is the best learning tool. The only way to understand and write on a subject is to connect to it. Lessons will consist of a preliminary discussion of the text to ensure the student has a comprehensive understanding of both thematic and formal aspects and their interrelation. This will be followed by a discussion of the period around the text; how its formal and thematic qualities relate to the era and circumstance of its production. The student will produce mind maps, short pieces of writing and general revision handy tools. We will also review the student's writing from longer writing tasks, keeping an eye on and improving both the student's manipulation of content and writing style. General discussion of what the text says to the student, how it makes them feel and what it reminds them of will be peppered throughout. Stories are the incredible learning devices. Through discussion students will be taught how to decode meaning in texts more generally, gaining a fantastic transferable skill that will benefit them far beyond the text that is being discussed.
