About Sophie

I am currently studying English studies at university. Beforehand, I took English all the way to advanced higher at school and achieved an A grade every year for the subject. I also achieved the award at advanced higher for being top of the class. I have been passionate about literature from a young age, and my passion has only continued to grow over the years.

About the lesson

The experience I have in teaching situations stems from work experience and mentoring younger students whilst I was in school. I often mentored in English classes. Through these experiences, taking an education module at university, and being a student myself, I feel that I have a good grasp on what makes a good teacher/tutor.

I approach teaching and mentoring in a patient, friendly, and respectful way. I believe listening to the student and what they feel they need is the best policy. By listening to the student I can grasp what they already know, what they are unsure of, and how they learn best.

In terms of lesson structure, I would begin by asking the student how they've been, how they are getting on with their work, and if there is anything they specifically want to address in the lesson.
After this, I may give a small starter task which helps them to begin thinking about the contents of the lesson or previous lessons.
From then on, we would begin to address the main work for that lesson which would be centred around key topics which would assist them in their learning and coincide with what they are learning in school.
During the lesson I would provide engaging tasks which keep the lesson fun and moving, so its not all writing.
At the end of the lesson we would aim to consolidate what we had discussed that lesson, go over anything which the student is a little less sure of, and speak about what we will address in the next lesson.

I understand that English isn't always everyone's favourite subject, but through my lessons I will aim to give the best learning experience I can. Having graduated from high school last year, I remember and understand the stress and pressure that students are under, and thus, my main priority is helping people feel less anxious about the subject as it doesn't have to be as difficult as it often seems.
