In any subject that I am teaching, I try to approach each topic by breaking it down into sections of 'working' or method, and making sure that the student is comfortable with each section before we move on and look at the bigger picture. When teaching younger students, I tend to use either workbooks or my own handmade problem sheets. With these, I tend to work through each question with the child, guiding them back on track if I think that they are failing to understand any particular step of the method but still allowing them to figure out the problem themselves. At higher levels, where I only teach English, I tend to base my style of tutoring on the exam that the student is preparing for, either using past papers or making my own exam papers in a similar format. Here, I usually guide the student through a very detailed process of planning the essay, helping them to understand how to link ideas with evidence and return to the point that they are addressing. I often leave students with the plan that we have devised to complete the essay for homework, and in the next session look over it with them before moving on to a new question. I try to tailor my method to each individual student, however, and usually get in touch a few days before each session to ask if there is anything particular that the student is worried about in order to prepare something relevant. I believe that I would be able to continute with these methods in an online space using a combination of webcam (so they can see me and I can see them), and google docs that we can both edit during the session, allowing me to correct and add suggestions to the work as we go along.
