About Ethan
Hi there! My name is Ethan, and I'm here to help you become the best possible readers and writers. I have been teaching and studying English for a long, long time - over ten years! I've taught in Taiwanese buxibans (cram schools), university classrooms, and Zoom rooms. I've taught two-year-olds, twenty-three-year-olds, and everything in between. I love English so much that I actually have a PhD in it! Don't worry, I won't make you call me Dr. Ethan if you don't want to. What I love about teaching English is that it helps you more than you think it will. I tell all of my students that English is the key to access new worlds, and a way to gain a deeper understanding of your own passions. If you love a book, English will help you dig deeper and understand the techniques the author uses. If you love to travel, English is the most common second language in the world and therefore a way to communicate with others in a foreign country. *Every* job wants skilled readers and writers, and that's what I'm here to teach. I'm looking forward to working with you in the future!

I excel at teaching the fundamentals of English reading and writing. My first lessons with every class focus on close reading passages from books or movies, to empower my students' analytical skills. We spend time learning how to ask good research questions (who, what, and why) and how to use them to write a thesis statement. English is more than a series of words and sentences. It's a way to understand others and yourself. My classes are fun and student-focused, as I tap into my students' natural curiosity and excitement and find ways to make English work for *them.* If my students love basketball, we can read NBA bloggers. If my students love fashion, we talk about fashion. Everyone has goals for their English study, and my job is to help them reach their goals. One of the greatest compliments I've ever received from a student was that I "don't tolerate bad writing." Students here will get the same attention to detail and care that I've applied to all of my students over the past decade. I tell my students that it doesn't matter what discipline they belong to, because *every* job requires strong reading and writing skills. I give all my students, whether elementary schoolers or graduate students, the tools they need to continue on their life journeys.

When I began my graduate degree at Vanderbilt, Ethan and I spoke. I found them to be a highly intelligent person, with a calming and honest presence. Our conversations helped me adjust to life at Vanderbilt, and I found their counsel honest and useful. I think they would make an excellent teacher.
Over the past 10 years Ethan has helped me improve my writing skills, to be more meaningful, impactful, and clear. They frequently challenge me to consider alternate approaches, which has changed my entire perspective on writing. Ethan is kind, nurturing, and above all else, incredibly patient. They are always available to help, and are always eager to provide said help.
