About Ben
I want to teach economics for two reasons. First, I have seen how students become confident and inspired learning economics. Some students study economics at A-Level, undergraduate or are considering whether to do so and I enjoy seeing students break down the barriers to knowledge that economics can sometimes impose. Complex models, difficult concepts and challenging theory can be learned and understood by everyone. It is really inspirational to see students finally understand them and their importance to how we think about the economy. Economics is relatively unique, especially macroeconomics, as we are close to frontier of knowledge. In other words, economics is at the leading edge of what is currently known about the economy and students can feel when they have developed confidence in the subject they are at the same level of general understanding as some of the most esteemed economists in the world. The second reason is economics affects all aspects of our lives and for those who do not wish to study it academically, a good knowledge of the subject will support you in life. Many people think about the economy without the frameworks and concepts to know really what is going on. Having that grasp of how economics gives us insight into how the economy and society work will put you in great position professionally and intellectually in whatever you choose to do in the future.

I have taught Economics on three occasions. I taught twice at Oxford Summer Courses, in 2024 and 2022 respectively. Before working at Oxford Summer Courses, I taught Global Economics at the University of Warwick's International Foundation Programme preparing students for their Business and Finance at undergraduate level. My education in Economics is from Birkbeck College, University of London. Moreover, I have industry experience to complement my teaching experience. I worked as a Debt Capital Market Analyst at CMDportal which gave me important experience in and knowledge of how bond and money markets work, particularly in ways beyond financial market theory taught at universities. My previous courses have focused on macroeconomics, building up models with microeconomic foundations and including financial markets to demonstrate how the financial system and the real economy relate to and affect each other. I would be more than happy to share the structure of the courses I have taught. In brief, courses began with microeconomic foundations of consumer utility, the intertemporal budget constraint and the firm's maximisation problem. From there, we covered GDP measurement, the balance between Consumption/Investment/Government Spending/Exports and the different growth strategies that are based off these expenditures. The course moved onto the theory of economic growth, business cycle theory, inflation, interest rates, global economic balance and financial markets. Courses were designed creatively to inspire students and to make challenging theory and concepts concise and applicable while following the traditional algebra-text-graphs approach to the subject. I utilise, for instance flow charts, to link up large and complex economic models. Lessons typically last one hour.
