About Shirin

1 - I bring 10+ years of experience teaching at the university level and privately tutoring students in econometrics, micro- and macro-economics, statistics, research design (both quantitative and qualitative), international development, business, and commerce.

2 - I am proficient in tutoring students using Python, R, eViews, STATA, SPSS, and MS-Excel for their coursework and assignments.

3 - I hold a Master of Applied Econometrics from Monash Uni, with a thesis on forecasting methods in macroeconomics. I also have a Master's in Economics degree from the London School of Economics (UK), with specialisation in Development Economics.

4 - I have recently completed a pre-doctoral fellowship at the University of Melbourne, and expect to start my PhD later this year.

5 - I was a Visiting Research Fellow in The Hague, the Netherlands, with my research funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

6 - I worked for several years in academia and government consulting.

7 - My work has been published in a peer-reviewed journal and a government report. Additionally, I have taught academic writing at a university and am available for tutoring in academic writing, publication, and proofreading.

8 - In my free time, I enjoy meditation, running, marathon training, and volunteering at a local museum.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHOOSE ME AS YOUR TUTOR:

1 - Besides econometrics, I also teach economics, mathematics & statistics, quantitative and qualitative research design, data analysis, international development, business, and commerce.

5 - Unlike standard tutoring, I provide my own detailed notes and clear explanations after our sessions to use for your independent revision.

About the lesson

1 - I am a Melbourne-based online tutor, teaching university students across Australia, including many international students.

2 - All sessions are conducted via video call for the convenience for students.

3 - I begin by assessing each student’s current understanding, and then tailor my teaching to meet their specific needs and learning style.

4 - I teach with the course structure and assessment requirements in mind, focusing on helping my students strive for distinctions in their assessments and exams.

5 - Each session taught using tailored notes, emailed to you after class, for revision and assignment/exam preparation.

6 - I believe that economic concepts are best understood through real-world examples, so I explain theories using practical, relatable examples. I want my students to truly understand and enjoy the subject, rather than merely memorise answers.

7 - I regularly ask my students to submit draft answers to potential exam questions. This allows me to check whether students are meeting the examiner's expectations and marking criteria.

8 - After each class, you will be encouraged to practise answering questions independently. You are welcome to email me your work once for feedback or to ask questions, which I am happy to provide at no extra cost. We may also review your answers during a tutoring session, where I will guide you on writing exam and assignment answers to improve your grades.

9 - When teaching the Academic Writing course, I emphasise practice. I have students write practice essays, which we then review together. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses from both the reader's and publisher’s perspectives. This approach helps students not only craft excellent essays with their audience in mind but also develop the critical and analytical skills necessary to evaluate their own work, which are valuable for future assignments.
