About Wayne
I taught students ranging from high school students to graduate students. Teaching first semester university students has been most rewarding to me. My background in biology has ranged from gross anatomy to cellular physiology, from the structure and location of organ systems to their physiological processes at the cellular and sub-cellular levels. My research and teaching activities have provided me with a strong background in genetics, developmental biology, and immunology.

Assuming I am teaching a lesson on gene expression, I would begin by playing for the student an animation I have used from "How Life Works." I would then show the students simple diagrams of the steps, and then ask them to draw their own diagram combining all the steps in the process of gene expression. This would be a lesson for an advanced high school or first semester university student. I challenge students to be active learners by giving them some of the responsibility for learning. Another example is teaching students mitosis and meiosis having them use different colored pipe cleaners to represent maternal and paternal chromosomal behavior in these different chromosomal divisions.
