About Emily

Hi, my name is Emily, and I'm a current PhD psychology research student and member of the teaching staff at Sheffield Hallam University. I recently graduated from the same university with a distinction in MSc Forensic Psychology and, before that, achieved a First-Class Honours degree in BSc Psychology. I have always had a passion for social science, particularly fascinated with how we, as human beings, develop and function, and how we interact with the world around us.

Before embarking on university, I took A-Levels in Psychology, Biology and Chemistry. Throughout my time at school, sixth form, and university, I have spent a lot of time mentoring younger students. I volunteered as a teaching assistant for a GCSE chemistry class, spent time as a peer mentor, and, while at university, had the opportunity to support students in their undergraduate dissertation projects. I have had 5 years experience as a private A-Level tutor and also volunteered for the mental health text service 'Shout' as well as working for a popular events company. Over the last two years, I have also worked as a demonstrator, seminar and workshop leader, and personal tutor at my university.

All of the above have helped me to build essential skills for working with people in a variety of settings and developing person-centred approaches in tutoring that I hope will help my students succeed. At current, I am studying for a PhD in forensic psychology and am training to become a demonstrator and lecturer at university.

Everybody learns differently. Some may be visual or auditory learners, while others may take a more logical or active method. Therefore, my goal is to take on each student with a flexible and adaptive approach and offer a range of teaching methods that will suit your individual needs. We will work together to isolate any difficulties you are facing and find the most effective and efficient ways to overcome them.

Having studied for A-levels myself and spent the last six years at university, I want to share the methods and techniques I found most helpful when grasping the basic concept of each topic, then building a confident understanding to being able to apply such knowledge to exam-style questions. Lessons can include PowerPoint presentations (which I am happy for students to save and use for personal revision), breaking down and working through exam-style/coursework-style questions and tasks, essay writing, practising different effective revision techniques (such as mind-maps, flash cards, and past papers), or anything else which you would like to try! I can be flexible with dates and times so to fit in with your busy schedule. Our first online meeting will also be free of charge and give the opportunity to have a chat, discuss what you wish to achieve from tutoring, and help you decide if I'm the right tutor for you!
