About Garry
Born in Leicestershire in 1978, I began my journey in music at the age of 8, delving into the realm of double bass, and later expanding my repertoire to include electric bass at 14.
My dedication to the craft led me to receive a scholarship from The Michael Tippett Musical Foundation in 1996, which I utilised to study under the tutelage of renowned bassist Herbie Flowers - known for his work with David Bowie, Lou Reed, T Rex, and George Harrison. Continuing my pursuit of excellence.
I further honed my skills with renowned jazz bassist Scott Colley.
2001 - 2022
Senior Lecturer at Leeds Conservatoire /Leeds College of Music
Teaching both Double and Electric bass for a wide range of courses.
I have performed with a long list of world-class jazz musicians over my 25 years as a professional performer and artist.

Highly recommend his lessons!I’ve known and studied with Garry as a tutor inside and outside of Leeds College of Music and can thoroughly recommend him as a tutor.
Garry’s lessons are friendly, concise and wonderful for long term development as a musician, not just a bass player.
Garry has a wealth of knowledge and can really help with music theory, listening skills and obviously development on both double and electric bass. His focus on making his students rounded musically with excellent foundations is truly admirable.
I highly recommend Garry.Garry has taught at all leaves from beginners to advanced. I worked with him at the music conservatoire for 20 years and got to see at first hand how well the students progressed under his guidance. Paul Wilkinson.
I had the pleasure of teaching alongside Garry for over 20 years at a UK conservatoire. Over that time he established himself not only as a virtuoso player of both electric and double basses, but as someone whose students consistently achieved to the fullest of their potential. There are now a number of excellent professional bassists in my part of the world who credit Garry Jackson as having been pivotal in their development. Anyone with similar aspirations would be fortunate to study with him.
First of all, he's a fantastic musician and bass player and we've often played together in different projects. In addition, he is a really good teacher who not only knows how to teach a student how to play, but also how to motivate him/her to practise every day and apply what he has learnt in every musical situation. I would highly recommend Garry to any beginner, intermediate or advanced student without hesitation.
I have known Garry for 20 years as a friend, fellow musician and, for a few years, a teaching colleague within a UK conservatoire. As well as being a prominent and in-demand bass player, he's a fist-rate teacher with just as much experience in music education. As a musician I often find myself working with professional instrumentalists who are former students of Garry's, which should tell you all you need to know!
Garry has been an inspirational teacher and truly supportive in his methods.
In a world that is flooded with online tuition, finding someone with knowledge and experience in both playing and teaching is simultaneously becoming easier and more difficult. Garry has many years teaching experience at a higher education institute as well as being very active in the Northern music scene. His ability to tailor tuition to the individual is fantastic, allowing consistent improvement and development.
I would recommend studying with Garry. He fosters excitement and joy for music, and is encouraging and creative in overcoming personal practice issues.
I have know Garry for over twenty years, and he has never stopped searching for new and interesting ways to improve his playing and performance practice. His musical versatility is echoed by his ability to adapt to the requirements of both collaborators, students alike. With his extensive experience as a musician and teacher, I cannot recommend him highly enough.
I met Garry on the local jazz scene in Yorkshire, where he was a lecturer at the prestigious Leeds Conservatoire. To be honest, I was a bit intimidated by his level of skill but his good-natured, friendly manner soon dispelled any awkwardness. When I found he was offering tuition, I jumped at the chance to learn with someone who is not only a master of the instrument but also has decades of experience sharing his knowledge with all kinds of students.
I have found that Garry believes in me, even when I doubt yourself, and always finds solutions that keep me moving forwards in my journey with the bass guitar. My lessons are challenging, fun and genuinely inspiring. If you want to maximize your potential with the bass guitar, you need to check out Garry.I’ve studied with Gary and he’s the best there is. An incredible Improvisor on both electric and upright bass who’s also a thoughtful and inspiring teacher.
I have played many gigs with Garry and he is a great friend. He's a great teacher with a passion for what he does and a wealth of teaching experience. He is also an expert in jazz and has helped countless young players develop their jazz playing. He's friendly and open and really enjoys seeing music students develop.
Excellent player and teacher, very experienced in many styles, would highly recommend!
