About Thomas
I am Thomas Brody and I am from Long Island, NY, now living in Brooklyn, NY. I have been playing and performing with the bass guitar since I was 6 years old, and have been studying the double bass since I was 9. My commitment to this craft was realized in 2014 when I was selected to the All-National Honors Orchestra, performing under Gerard Schwarz at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN. I also was in the All-Eastern Symphony Orchestra where I performed in Providence, RI and the 2013 All-State Orchestra where I performed in Rochester, NY.
I premiered a new piece for double bass and piano by my frequent-collaborator in all styles Jonah Bobo, performed a new concerto written in 2014 by renowned-composer Dana Wilson, and perform in a funk band "Butter". I have also performed in a master class for world famous double bassist, and one of my heroes, Edgar Meyer. I was a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and was the International Apprentice in Double Bass with the National Arts' Centre Orchestra for 2019. My mission is to further push the boundaries of the double bass/bass guitar and its role in modern day music making, no matter the style or genre at hand. To become a mature artist, mastering both technique and musical expression, is my dream, but my ultimate goal is to connect with others by expressing what’s inside my heart through the voice of the double bass and electric bass, whether that be through teaching or performing.

I teach lessons to a multitude of students of all ages and levels with various musical interests and goals such as:
-College Audition Coaching
-NYSSMA Preparation Coaching
-Half Classical/Half Other Style
-Music Theory
-Bass Line Creation
I teach in person in NYC and Long Island, and I do online lessons via Zoom, Skype and FaceTime.
I studied the Canadian School of Double Bass Methodology created by former London Symphony Orchestra Principal Bassist, Joel Quarrington. In my studies, I also learned to play the double bass tuned in 5ths, rather than the customary 4ths tuning (I still do teach and perform both, however, depending on the situation at hand!)
I studied the Rabbath School of Double Bass with Nicholas Walker, a phenomenal composer and double bassist of all styles of music.
I believe that music is a universal language and is story telling.
When we learned our first language how did we learn? By looking at books on pieces of paper? No! We learned by hanging out with the best speakers of the language we knew; our parents or guardian figures.
I believe that learning by ear and using our ears to guide our musical choices is paramount to a music education. Of course, you will learn how to read music with me and have that experience as well as it is also important; but music is sound!
After all, the word technique comes from a Greek word "Techne" which means "how to make beautiful". Everything I teach is aimed towards the pursuit of this beauty.
Combining these educational experiences, I have a plethora of concrete information, and real-experience that give students a foundation of fundamentals, technique, and musical/life guidance that help foster and build the tools necessary to express themselves at a more efficient level.
Music is a reflection of life, as the great Herbie Hancock once said; so to be a musician, is to be a human being. I always make connections to experiences outside music in order to help the student understand the material I administer, based on your needs and goals.
Learning, generally, is:
unconscious incompetence
conscious incompetence
conscious competence
unconscious competence
I take you through each step of the process in a caring and supportive way that cultivates a safe space to grow and take risks, and discover your own unique voice.
A typical lesson plan would be rooted in fundamentals and technique to begin that are taught by ear and paper with exercises, activities, and challenges that lead to a repertoire choice that coincides with that fundamental and technique.
Based on what the student wants to learn and achieve, I tailor each and every lesson to the unique individual.
