About Isla
I am an Architecture tutor with 5 years of experience and a Master of Architecture with a specialism in computational design and digital fabrication. I have worked with over 155 students across undergraduate and postgraduate architecture programmes. My computational design background means I bring a genuinely expert understanding of both the software and the design methodology of digital architecture, which produces students who use these tools creatively and strategically rather than only technically. I keep my own digital practice current through ongoing personal design projects, which ensures my teaching reflects the current state of digital architectural practice. My Architecture teaching in the digital domain specifically develops computational design and Building Information Modelling skills that are increasingly central to contemporary architectural practice and education. I teach BIM concepts — building information modelling as a process, what information is embedded in a model, how different disciplines collaborate through shared model environments — alongside the specific software skills of Revit and ArchiCAD because BIM is a workflow and collaboration methodology as much as a software competency. Revit is taught for architectural and structural modelling, covering the family system that underlies all Revit objects, the view management system, and the documentation workflow from 3D model to construction drawing set. I teach Rhino and Grasshopper for parametric and computational design, covering the visual programming paradigm of Grasshopper as a design tool that enables the exploration of complex formal relationships that would be impractical to develop manually. Parametric design thinking — designing through the definition of rules and relationships rather than through specific formal decisions — is taught as a design methodology alongside its software implementation, because the computational thinking that parametric design develops is valuable independently of the specific forms it produces. Digital fabrication — the connection between digital models and physical making through laser cutting, 3D printing, and CNC milling — is addressed because students who understand how digital models translate into physical fabrication make better digital design decisions and develop a richer understanding of the relationship between representation and making. My teaching goal is an architecture student who is genuinely fluent with the digital design tools of contemporary practice.
