About Kate
Developing Dancers Melbourne (DDM) is a boutique private classical ballet coaching practice offering highly personalised one-to-one training for committed young dancers.
Led by Kate Reilly — former professional dancer, experienced ballet pedagogue and registered Occupational Therapist — we specialise in individual coaching grounded in the Vaganova method. Kate brings over a decade of experience training dancers from beginner through pre-professional level, with many former students accepted into leading national and international ballet academies, companies and professional programs.
Private coaching is designed to complement a dancer’s core training, providing targeted technical development, audition and exam preparation, conditioning, musicality and clear pathway guidance in a supportive, low-pressure environment. Kate is known for her open communication with families, attention to detail, and her ability to tailor training precisely to each dancer’s physique, learning style and goals.
Sessions are held by appointment only in South-East Melbourne, with limited weekly availability to ensure focused, high-quality instruction.

The Vaganova Method of ballet training is widely regarded as the best training system in the world. My ballet classes are based on this method, yet adapted to Australian students. Whether you seek to improve your ballet technique or gain fitness and vitality, my breadth of teaching experience combined with an infectious passion for dance and movement inspires and motivates students of all ages to strive for improvement. I have trained numerous students from beginner through pre-professional level, seeing many accepted into professional academies around the world.
Young Dancers
Having lived & breathed dance most of her life, Kate brings a wealth of personal & professional experience to her coaching. A move to Germany at age 16 to train under the Russians at the acclaimed John Cranko-School, led to a deep respect and appreciation for world-renowned Vaganova method of ballet teaching and a determination to make this method accessible to her future students. In her 12 years as Artistic Director of the Melbourne School of Classical Dance, Kate trained numerous students from beginner through pre-professional level, seeing many accepted into professional academies around the world. She takes a highly intuitive approach based on over fourteen years of teaching, closely monitoring her students’ progress and adjusting course as necessary. With genuine care, technical expertise and an inspirational manner, you can be assured that your child will be in capable & caring hands.
Adult Ballet & Wellbeing
Ballet exercises can relieve pain, improve circulation and bring a new lease on life at any age! A huge repertoire of body conditioning exercises and stretches, normally only taught to dancers, may significantly improve the mobility and wellbeing of men and women of all ages with regular practice. The exercises can be very gentle and slow, thus suited to even the most fitness-challenged individuals. If a traditional ballet barre is more your thing, we can work on that too!
Method
Kate specialises in the Russian Vaganova method of classical ballet and is certified with the Ballet Conservatoire and International Character Dance examination syllabi. Combined with decades of experience in human movement, Pilates, body conditioning and stretching.
Devised by Christine Walsh AM, The Australian Conservatoire of Ballet’s 12 year program is designed to suit the needs of all classical ballet students who are unable to take full-time dance training from an early age. The Australian Conservatoire of Ballet training and assessment program emphasises correct placement, dynamics and performing quality which are all qualities inherent in the Vaganova method.
“Natural talents are great, but they don’t appear often enough to fill our theatres with good dancers. There has to be a method… ” – Gabriela Darvish on the Russian method.
