About Gordon

I am a Boston-based trumpet player, teacher, and concert presenter. A third-generation trumpeter, I got an early start in music and studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto, York University, and the Banff Centre for the Arts. I also studied privately with master musicians Laurie Frink, David Mott, and Bill Dixon. I have worked with symphony orchestras, folk groups, church choirs, jazz bands, and at weddings and funerals. I have appeared at festivals across Canada and the US, and made television and radio appearances. I am busy as a studio musician, appearing on more than 100 recordings of jazz, classical, pop, rock, folk music and more. Artists I have worked with include Jean Leloup, Matt Dusk, the Barr Brothers, Gordon Downie (The Tragically Hip), Cold Specks, Jean Derome, Silver Mount Zion, and Matana Roberts. I have over 30 years’ experience teaching trumpet and I was the director and principal teacher of the Studio d'Improvisation de Montréal for 10 years. I have been a guest teacher at the New England Conservatory of Music, McGill University, Université de Montréal, and at festivals across North America. I also work as a concert presenter, and since 2020 have served as executive director of Boston’s Creative Music Series. Previously I co-directed the Festival of New Trumpet Music Canada, and was co-founder and co-director of the l'Envers and Mardi Spaghetti concert series in Montréal. I have also worked as a music journalist and radio host.

About the lesson

In our lessons, you'll learn the fundamentals of the instrument in a creative and positive way that applies to all styles of music, from classical to jazz and beyond. We focus on expanding range and endurance, developing tone and articulation, and on phrasing and musicianship. We can work on repertoire, preparing for exams and auditions, as well as improvisation and composition. My goal is to help you grow as a trumpet player, and to play the music you love!

I am proud to have a diverse studio including beginners, amateur players, and professional musicians of all backgrounds and styles, from 5 to 75 years old. I have experience teaching those with physical and intellectual disabilities. I studied extensively in New York with master teacher Laurie Frink, the foremost exponent of Carmine Caruso's universally effective method. I combine this approach with other methods I’ve developed throughout my teaching and performing careers. I am fluent in English and French.
