About Patrick
I’m a pianist, cellist, and educator based in Ventura, California. I’ve been teaching for 14 years and have built my career around education, working in a variety of arts and music education settings, performing, and immersing myself in the arts.
I’ve worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, including adults, beginners, advanced students, students with disabilities, and musicians experiencing playing-related injuries. My lessons focus on musical growth, healthy technique, body awareness, and confidence. Whether you want to learn your favorite music, build a strong foundation, improve your technique, or prepare for more advanced study, I tailor lessons to fit the students individual goals and interests.
I studied piano performance and music history at the University of La Verne and continued my studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Outside of teaching, I work as a luthier and contribute to the National Cello Institute, and I also perform with the Vela String Duo.
As a progressive music educator, I’m always looking for new ways to think about how to comprehend music. I believe exploration and curiosity are essential parts of developing as a musician. My goal is to give students the tools and confidence to explore, develop their own voice, and build a unique and personal connection with music.
In my free time, I enjoy playing the cello, drinking coffee, and distance running. Some of my students have gone on to attend institutions such as The Colburn School, USC, UCLA, and Azusa Pacific University.
IN-PERSON lessons are held in Ventura, CA, and ONLINE lessons are held via Zoom. I do not travel to students’ homes.

Perfect! Patrick is a great teacher. He makes learning the piano enjoyable.
- Thank you for the kind words Kathy! It has been great to work together and I am glad you're enjoying lessons!Patrick's response :
Perfect! I am a beginner adult student and only self studied playing the piano several years ago.
I really appreciated the free meet and greet lesson to help me determine if I wanted Patrick to teach me piano.
He is professional but also friendly. He makes you feel comfortable. He is polite, kind and listens well.
At each lesson, I learn something new and I really appreciate him making sure I am learning how to play so that I don’t injure myself.
He encourages me to have fun playing the piano and not to worry if I miss a day but encourages me practice daily like 30 to 45 minutes but not too long so I don’t get worn out. He wants me to enjoy playing the piano, which I do.
He is very considerate and thoughtful. I really like his feedback, which is very reassuring that I’m improving and also corrects me in a positive way explaining why I should not do something and shows me how to do something else that is better.
I like that he just not uses books for learning but also encourages and provides links to watch and listen to performances of professional pianists to see how they play.
He encourages communication even in between lessons especially if I have a question about an assignment. He is good with texts or emails and responds quickly. I really appreciate his quick replies to my queries.
I also like how he is understanding and flexible in accommodating my needs and schedule especially when it affects my weekly lesson to be canceled. He only asks for a monthly update of any days I might miss the next month and at least a 24 hour notice when something unexpected occurs, which is very reasonable.
Also, I really appreciate that he is concerned with being sanitary and keeping his studio clean. He has each student wash their hands before each lesson.
He is very welcoming each time I arrive and very pleasant when I’m done with the lesson making sure I understand what I need to practice on during the week before my next lesson.
So, overall I recommend Patrick DeJardin highly to teach piano.- Thank you Cosima! You have made incredible progress with your playing in the last 7 months. It has also been fun playing piano/cello duos with you!Patrick's response :
Perfect! My son has been taking piano lessons with Patrick for only a few weeks, and it has been a wonderful experience. I've seen impressive improvement in his playing in just a short time. Patrick does an excellent job explaining new concepts clearly and tailoring each lesson to my sons interests and needs. Patrick is friendly, patient and extremely knowledgeable. He is also flexible and understanding when we need to adjust our schedule. I highly recommend Patrick to anyone looking for a dedicated, supportive and encouraging piano teacher.

I am an adult learner of the piano. I am mostly self-taught, but have had a handful of lessons with various piano teachers over the years. I truly love working with Patrick. He helped me recognize things about my playing that I never noticed. He has enabled me to really focus on the tone that I am producing on the piano as well as boost my confidence. He is super patient, and never makes me feel judged in my playing. When I am not necessarily grasping a concept, Patrick has many other ways to help me understand what he is getting at. He has so many strategies and clearly has a wealth of knowledge. I truly feel that I am progressing after a few years of stagnation in my practice. I can’t recommend working with Patrick enough!
Patrick is remarkable. He has an amazing ability to teach difficult things and make them fun . Thanks to Patrick , i started thinking about piano not as a hobby but something i want to do as a professional . He is increadibly kind, patient and relatable . And he is a first rate pianist himself .
I have been doing cello lessons with Patrick for the past few months. He has been so kind and patient with me as an adult learner. He has helped me start working through the things that can easily hold back adult learners, including all around brain and body focus. I really appreciate it.

Review for Patrick – Cello Instructor
I’m an adult cello student, and Patrick has made learning the cello both approachable and enjoyable. His lessons are clear, helpful, and encouraging, I highly recommend himPatrick is a patient teacher who has guided me incredibly well during my first few years of piano learning. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher to guide me through my piano journey!
My son loves going to his Cello lessons. He’s improved significantly within his first 6 months with Patrick. Highly recommended!
Patrick has been a fantastic teacher for my daughter, who has been studying with him about 7 years. She is 16 now and he has been a positive , reliable mentor - consistently providing engaging lessons and structured practice homework. He sets expectations, guides her through challenging pieces and we’ve watched her grow so much as a musician. Thank you, Patrick!
DeJardin is a very patient teacher who provides a nurturing environment. Our son learned not only the techniques and theory, but also how to effectively practice his music pieces. The recitals are so wonderful to watch and made our son built confidence in performing. The teacher’s commitment in helping our son get better in piano also allowed him to discover his passion for other areas in music, and is now thriving in High School playing the piano in Jazz band and other instruments in Regiment. Thankful for DeJardin Piano for the positive impact you’ve had on our son!
Our son who is in high school now had lessons with Patrick over 5 years until Patrick moved.
When we look for a person who will teach our son, the most important thing to look for is “their personality” then “their teaching skills/methods” and “their own talents and skill”
Patrick has all of those, so we were very fortunate to have found him.
Patrick was always calm with our son even when our son could not focus well and he always brought his attention back to his lesson which I learned for myself as a mother.
Patrick was also not one of those teachers who would tell me or our son “I’m very busy” and would rush to finish and say “I have to go”.
He was open to us and easy to talk which allowed me ask questions and receive advice from him on how to support our son’s practice and some corrections.
After Patrick moved, our son tried a different teacher, but did not work out. However our son still loves music, thanks to the great experiences of playing and practicing with Patrick.Patrick is a great teacher. He will meet the student where he is in his ability and work to help the student grow in his ability from there.
I studied piano until I entered college, then didn’t play again until I retired and pretty much started over with Patrick. Though my lessons with him have primarily been via zoom, that has actually worked out very well, I think because he seems so observant & comfortable that it almost seems like we’re in the same room. I also particularly like that in addition to working on technique, he includes learning about theory and listening to music from various periods and styles as well, making my lessons feel very well-rounded.
In the last year or so I’ve also experienced severe hand & wrist injuries as a result of having to use a cane to get around, and these injuries have seriously affected my ability to play the piano. Luckily for me, Patrick has proved to be extremely knowledgeable & helpful about learning how to deal with my injuries and make changes in the way I play so that I can continue to enjoy my studies of the piano.
So, if you’re interested in finding a piano teacher who is both instructive and inspiring, I highly recommend Patrick DeJardin.Patrick is not only a great piano instructor, but a great person. He does a phenomenal job at facilitating growth by adapting to and recognizing students' needs. Outside of just “playing the piano”, we've also had many interesting discussions on musicality, technique, and music history, lending towards a thought-provoking and interdisciplinary experience. It has been a truly amazing experience working with Patrick, and I can’t recommend him enough!
Our two students, Aiden & Aubrey have been under Patrick's instruction since 2016 and have been enjoying weekly lessons. Their growth and love of music is all due to Patrick's care, guidance and has developed their skills in other areas of their academics as well as other instruments. We also love that Patrick has introduced them to music history & challenged them with their writings. We are thankful to have him as a piano instructor.
Working with DeJardin Piano has been one of the most rewarding experiences for our family. All four of my children have taken lessons with Mr. DeJardin, and I can say without hesitation that he is not only an exceptional piano teacher but also a remarkable mentor and friend to teenagers. His ability to connect with each student personally, while nurturing their musical growth with patience and excellence, is truly rare.
Mr. DeJardin brings out the best in his students, encouraging both discipline and creativity. He creates a learning environment that is both structured and inspiring, helping young musicians develop not only their technical skills but also their confidence and love for music. Beyond music, he consistently demonstrates genuine care and insight, becoming a steady, positive presence in the lives of his students.
Choosing Mr. DeJardin as your piano teacher is a decision you will never regret. He is a rare find—dedicated, talented, and deeply invested in the success and well-being of his students. I recommend him without reservation.Patrick is absolutely the best!! Our kids love him and his lessons and their skills accelerated really fast while working with Patrick. He is very talented which I think motivated the kids to play well. He is also strong technically, and he is fun and creative. He has tons of great ideas to adapt to each student’s interests or challenges. You would be lucky to have him as teacher!
