About Or Thalia

My name is Or Thalia Severino and I immigrated to America at age 5. My native language is Hebrew, but I am fluent in English. I've had experience with the ESL curriculum myself, as well as experience taking care of children who are bilingual and learning English for the first time. I am a child development major and I will be getting my first degree, associate's degree, in spring 2023. I have experience writing up lesson plans and creating activities that can actually help children learn. Furthermore, I've always felt a connection with English and loved learning it. Tutoring is something I'm passionate about and so is English. I believe that teaching something like English should be fun and engaging as much as it should produce progress. This doesn't mean that the children will play around the entire class, it's just important to keep the children engaged when learning so it's actually enjoyable for them. If they see it as enjoyable, they will want to learn more.

About the lesson

My lessons are made for elementary school children as a priority. I am open to teaching children of proficiency levels from beginner to intermediate. For a beginner, my first lesson as an example would include working with the going over the English letters and pronunciation and introducing simple and every-day vocabulary to practice introducing themselves and where they're from. This would be done to ensure that by the end of the 1hr session, they would be able to memorize and understand what they learned rather than just throw information at them and expect them to pick it up. For an intermediate learner, my first lesson would include working with introductions as well; however, the introduction would be to prepare 5 sentences to verbally introduce themselves from their own vocabulary. After that, we would go over the sentences together and make corrections as needed. From there we would focus on proper sentence structure, descriptive writing. If we had extra time, I would also work on reading paragraphs and test their understanding of the material. I stand out amongst other tutors not only because I have experience working with bilingual children and children learning English, I have experience learning English as a second language myself. Being an immigrant who came to the country only knowing my native language, I understand the mental space children go through while learning English as a second language. Even more so, I major in child development and have had practice creating lesson plans and curriculum for children. My teaching method is to cater to the child's needs. Some children learn faster than others, while some learn slower and need more support. This is completely normal and should be expected when working with children. Their learning needs are what will shape the curriculum to ensure that they get the support they need to make progress.
