About Tate
I have spent eight years teaching programming to more than 280 students using creative projects as the gateway to technical mastery. My background combines a degree in computer science with professional experience as an indie game developer and web designer. This dual identity as both educator and practicing creator gives my teaching authenticity and currency. I have worked with students from age ten to adult professionals seeking to add technical skills to their creative practice. My students have published games launched websites and built apps that solve real problems in their communities. I am known for my patient encouraging style and my ability to help students overcome the frustration that often accompanies learning to code. I design all my own project-based curricula and maintain a library of assets templates and tutorials that students can access between sessions. Outside of teaching I develop my own games exhibit at indie game festivals and contribute to creative coding communities. I believe that programming is a fundamental literacy for the twenty-first century and that everyone deserves the opportunity to express themselves through technology.

My programming teaching is built on the belief that code is a creative medium and learning to program should be as engaging as learning to write stories or compose music. I specialize in teaching through game development web design and mobile app creation because these contexts provide immediate visual feedback and strong motivation. For game development I teach students to build progressively complex projects starting with simple arcade games and advancing to platformers and puzzle games using engines and frameworks that match their skill level. Web design is taught through the creation of real portfolio sites teaching HTML CSS JavaScript and responsive design principles by building projects students are proud to share. Mobile app development introduces students to user interface design data persistence and API integration through practical applications. I teach computational thinking through these creative projects ensuring that students understand loops conditionals functions and data structures in context. Debugging is taught as a detective activity where students learn to read error messages trace code execution and use systematic testing. I also teach the fundamentals of software project management including planning version control and iterative development. For students preparing for computer science courses I supplement creative projects with algorithmic theory and examination preparation.
