About Vanessa
I am an Architecture tutor with 5 years of experience and a Master of Architecture with a specialism in architectural design and theory. I have worked with over 155 students including secondary school students preparing architecture portfolios for university applications, first-year students adjusting to the demands of architecture school, and more advanced students developing major design projects. My design-focused architectural training means I bring a genuine designer's perspective to portfolio and design teaching rather than only a technical one. My Architecture teaching specifically develops the design thinking that is the most distinctive and the most difficult-to-teach dimension of architectural education, because spatial and aesthetic reasoning must be cultivated through practice, feedback, and exposure rather than learned from books. I begin design development work with concept generation — helping students find a compelling idea, a generative principle, or a meaningful metaphor that can drive and organize the spatial decisions of a design — because designs without strong concepts tend to be directionless collections of formal choices, while concept-driven designs have an internal logic that makes them both more coherent and more defensible. Precedent study is a central component of my teaching, with each week bringing analysis of a significant contemporary or historical building whose design decisions illuminate a specific architectural principle — how scale is controlled, how light is brought into a space, how structure and form are integrated — because architectural understanding develops through engagement with real architectural work rather than only abstract principles. Sketching is taught as a thinking tool rather than only a presentation medium, because the ability to develop ideas through rapid freehand drawing is a genuinely different cognitive activity from developing ideas in CAD or conversation, and the sketch habit produces more generative and exploratory design thinking. I address the architecture school interview as a specific preparation challenge, because the ability to present, explain, and defend a portfolio is assessed in most architecture school admissions and requires explicit practice alongside the development of the portfolio content itself. My teaching goal is an architecture applicant or student whose design thinking is genuinely compelling and whose portfolio demonstrates it clearly.
