About Tommaso

I am a London-based contemporary art theory and art history tutor, currently working as Gallery Manager at Brooke Benington. I hold an MA in Contemporary Art Theory with Distinction from Goldsmiths, University of London, and have over eight years of international experience working in commercial galleries, exhibitions, and art fairs across the UK and Europe. My professional background includes curatorial work, artist liaison, sales, and public engagement, as well as academic research and published writing on contemporary ecological art. I combine critical, decolonial, queer, and feminist perspectives with practical insight into how the art world operates, supporting students in developing confidence, critical thinking, and a clear understanding of contemporary art and its professional contexts.

I teach contemporary art theory and art history through a critical, decolonial, and queer lens. I started my research at Goldsmiths with a focus on Italian colonialism and eco contemporary art, I aim to include the narratives that traditional Western art history has often left out, particularly those of women, queer artists, and non-Western perspectives, and to invite students to question how histories are written and who gets represented. Drawing from my background in queer ecological art, feminism, and eight years of experience working in galleries across different countries, I bring a practical insight into how the art world operates, from international exhibitions and biennales to art fairs and curatorial practices. My classes are particularly suited to art students who are seeking to develop their practice and need the tools to navigate the contemporary art world, both critically and practically. I have an interactive approach and I encourage students to speculate, question, and analyse artworks together. I prioritise close visual analysis and practical understanding, helping students build confidence in interpreting artworks and exhibitions at first sight. We can organise studio visits in London with artists, curators, and other art professionals to get direct insight about how the art world really works. Alongside this, I integrate techniques from my mindfulness training to support students in staying grounded, organised, and less overwhelmed in their studies and creative practices. I help students to gain confidence in analysing artworks, making connections throughout art history, and also to find their own place in the art world.
