About Connor
As a passionate educator and an advocate of community engagement, Connor Thummel has taught privately and co-founded ensembles across the country. Before arriving in Boston, Mr. Thummel co-directed and performed with Benefit Brass, a Chicago-based non-profit brass ensemble that organized benefit concerts for charities. While completing his undergraduate degree at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he was also a member of Classical Connections, a student-run organization that presented performances to the underserved. Mr. Thummel has also taught at clinics and privately for several years in both the Chicago and Boston areas, and his students have performed and received high marks in solo and ensemble competitions. He is currently on faculty with the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham, and teaches at schools in Brookline and Chestnut Hill. In addition to a music performance degree, he also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Boston University. While at Boston University, he studied with Gabriel Rice, and at Indiana University he studied with Professor Peter Ellefson. Other former teachers include Tim Smith, Doug Rosenthal, BJ Hardesty, and Chip DeStefano. Mr. Thummel has attended festivals and seminars across the country, including the Mulcahy Seminar and the Third Coast Trombone Retreat. While in high school, he had the opportunity to play in Midwest Young Artists. There, he received honorable mentions in the Walgreens National Concerto Competition in 2010, and the Discover Chamber Competition in 2011. Outside of performing and teaching, Mr. Thummel enjoys running, reading, and writing short stories.

Our ultimate goals in lessons will be to make playing easier, more versatile, and to craft a unique singing sound on the instrument.
The process of learning an instrument is very similar to the process of learning to speak, and the purpose of communication is the same. In our lessons we will draw on those same processes to try and make playing as easy as speaking, always with the goal of being able to communicate through the instrument. Much of the way we will put this into practice is by teaching through demonstration, or playing back and forth.
Through this process students will not only improve and become more versatile players, but also develop their own distinct voice on the instrument, practice mindfulness, and connect with their learning process in new ways.
In order to reach these goals, I collaborate with each student to design a practice routine that meets their playing needs, their ultimate goals, and the time constraints of their schedule. Lessons include work on fundamentals of playing and basic ear training, as well as etudes from the Cimera, Bordogni, Getchell and Arban books. We will add solos as students progress.

Perfect! Connor is a wonderful teacher. He possesses incredible trumpet expertise and an amazing ability to teach students to play notes right and sound beautiful.
- It was a lot of fun working with Carson today! I admired how he was open to trying new things, and how easily he picked up on new material. In particular, I was impressed with how easily he was able to fix a recurring rhythm in one of his band songs, since it's a more complex rhythm, and because rhythm is usually something that takes longer to develop for many students. We spent today exploring some of a warm up pattern I provided, we worked on Carson's band music, and we learned most of our first Getchell etude together. We also talked about things that Carson would like to get out of lessons if he decides to continue, and used the Getchell etude to start working toward our goal. He has a lot of strengths on the instrument, and I'm excited to see how he progresses!Connor's response :
Perfect! Connor was great! Such a good time. Friendly and open, super engaging. Can’t wait for next time!
- Ben's enthusiasm for learning to play the trumpet and his positive attitude made it fun to work with him, and it sets what I think is a solid foundation for future progress! He already plays with a great sound and a relaxed approach, and I'm excited to help him take what he can do and apply it to other areas of his playing. One of those areas for improvement that we talked about and worked on in our lesson was developing his high range, which we will accomplish this semester with a fundamentals routine, scales, etudes that reach into that range, and any music that Ben would like to work on when he'd like. I'm excited for a fun semester!Connor's response :
Perfect! I only just had my first lesson with Connor but as a returning player it was refreshing to have someone far more experienced then me explain things in a way that I could easily understand and put into practice instead of being told to do something without any real guidance. His teaching methods from what I’ve seen are great and probably the most important part is I get along with him as well as enjoy the lessons.
- Christian's goal is to audition for the marine band and be accepted, and he's already off to a great start! Sound production looks and sounds easy, and the sound is resonant. Most of our lessons will involve taking what he can already do and applying it to gradually more challenging music--including his audition rep--so that he's ready for his audition. After taking a year away from playing, I would say the next step for now is to get comfortable on the instrument again by playing each day, or as often as his schedule allows. The fundamentals routine is a way to help cover some of the essential skills in brass playing, and the etude is an outlet for musical expression and creativity.Connor's response :

Our son has been seeing Connor weekly since September. Hands down the best decision we have made for our son . He looks forward to his trumpet lesson every week! We originally put him in trumpet so that as a middle child he could have his own “ thing “ something to call his own - that no one in our family does…. He immediately took to it and Connor ! Along with a love for music our son has Dyslexia , severe Anxiety and a plethora of other learning disabilities. To my surprise,Connor has found a way to get our son to listen, learn and play the trumpet…all while being extremely patient, very communicative, and creating a fun and safe learning experience! I would highly recommend Connor as an instructor with nothing but amazing things to say about him.
He is an enthusiastic teacher and creates a positive learning environment. My child could raise his level thanks to him. He responds to requests, teaches the basics, and gives the pleasure of playing an instrument.
Connor has been my son’s teacher for two years. His knowledgeable tutelage has helped my son make significant progress in his musical skills. He is excellent at tailoring lessons to focus on individual students’ needs and goals. He is also very approachable and open to any questions and concerns along the way. Highly recommend!
My son really enjoyed his lessons with him!! In his words, “He doesn’t just tell me I’m doing it wrong, he actually shows me how to play it right. You can tell he really likes his job.”
